Ocean Freight made simple by Freightway Logistics Solution

90% of world trade is shipped via ocean freight

Ocean freight is the transportation of goods by sea. It is the most important mode of transportation for global trade, accounting for about 90% of all goods shipped internationally.

There are currently about 20 million shipping containers in the world, and roughly 10 million of them are moving on vessels at any given time of the year.

Shipping containers are the standard unit of load for ocean freight. They are made of steel and are available in a variety of sizes, including 20-foot, 40-foot, and high-cube containers.

The top 3 biggest shipping lines are 马士基 , MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company , and 达飞轮船

These shipping lines control a large share of the global ocean freight market. They operate large fleets of container ships and offer services to all corners of the world.

Shipping costs are a big part of logistics for manufacturers and shippers.

Ocean freight rates can vary depending on a number of factors, including the origin and destination of the shipment, the type of cargo being shipped, and the time of year. However, ocean freight is generally the most cost-effective mode of transportation for long-distance shipments.

  • Ocean freight rates have declined significantly since the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. However, they are still higher than pre-pandemic levels.
  • The global shipping industry is facing a number of challenges, including port congestion, labor shortages, and rising fuel costs. These challenges are contributing to higher shipping costs and longer transit times.
  • Despite these challenges, ocean freight remains the most important mode of transportation for global trade. It is a vital link in the global supply chain and plays a crucial role in the global economy.

A simple freight quote usually involves sea freight, container haulage, forwarding charges, terminal handling charges, and customs clearance fees.

The freight forwarder will be able to provide you with a quote for all of these services.

Ocean freight rates usually involve surcharges, fees, various adjustment factors, rules, exceptions, and exclusions as per the tariffs set out by the carrier.

It is important to carefully review the tariff before booking your shipment.

The freight rates differ from types of containers as well. They are 20', 40' & Hi Cube GP Containers, Reefer Containers, flat rack Containers, OOG Containers, open top Containers, and many more. All of these depends on the nature of the cargo to be shipped by the shippers.

The type of container you need will depend on the type of cargo you are shipping. For example, if you are shipping perishable goods, you will need a reefer container.

There are three main elements to the cost of transporting goods by sea:

  • The sea freight charges set by the carrier
  • The cost associated with securing the empty containers and container haulage from shippers premises to the port of loading or vice versa
  • The costs associated with terminal handling of the goods at the ports of loading or vice versa
  • The cost associated with clearing the goods, document, and electronic data interchange fees with customs and other government authority (if any) at ports of loading or vice versa

Another factor that affects the cost of containerized sea freight is whether the goods require a dedicated full container (FCL) or can be consolidated with other cargo (LCL).

  • FCL (Full Container Load): The shipping line charges a flat fee per 20′ GP container, 40′ GP container, or 40′ Hi Cube container.
  • LCL (Less than Container Load): When you do not have enough cargo to fill a shipping container, LCL is usually a very viable option. Specialist LCL sea freight consolidators run services to all of the major ports and gateways around the world.

Whether you are looking to ship a full container or less than a container, most probably you have to use a freight forwarding company to handle the shipment.

Freight forwarders can help you with all aspects of your ocean freight shipment, including booking the shipment, arranging for container haulage, and handling customs clearance.
