OCC in three words: Progressive, nurturing and collaborative

I joined OCC in 2016 from a community mental health team and was well-supported from the start. I took on new lead roles, became a Practice Supervisor, and briefly worked in London before returning to OCC.

I’ve worked in various teams, including the Assistive Technology Team and now the Review Team, where I ensure equipment like stand aid hoists meet users’ needs through regular reviews for safety. We also help colleagues assess care packages and recommend suitable equipment.

I collaborated with Oxford Robotics/UCL.

During a secondment with the Assistive Technology Team, I collaborated with Oxford Robotics/UCL on using robots in occupational therapy, focusing on seating, posture, and touch. I led training sessions and focus groups with the robot, Mona, to develop realistic case studies. Our work was featured on ITV Meridian News and BBC Radio Oxford, and I will present it at Bournemouth University soon.

I love my job and feel privileged to work with people in their homes. Our extensive equipment catalogue and collaboration with various agencies enhance people’s sense of purpose and support carers.

I’m proud to work with an experienced, passionate, and supportive team of OTs.

We eagerly help each other and strive to improve our knowledge and services for Oxfordshire residents, advocating strongly for our profession within the organisation.

Oxfordshire offers beautiful towns, countryside, and great transport links to London. Within Oxfordshire County council (OCC), there are many opportunities for career progression, challenging projects, and continuous learning.

The role is more varied than I anticipated, allowing me to work holistically and listen to people’s needs and aspirations.

When I graduated in 2009, I expected to always work in mental health and did so for the first 5 years. Moving to Adult Social Care was initially daunting, but I’ve thrived both personally and professionally. The role is more varied than I anticipated, allowing me to work holistically and listen to people’s needs and aspirations. The strong OT professional role and advocacy within Adult Social Care has given me great job satisfaction and the ability to make a real difference.

I worked with a young lady and her family after her diagnosis with a life-impacting condition. Collaborating with the Oxford Centre for Enablement, we determined the best home adaptations and provided educational sessions about her condition. Oxford Direct Services installed a level access shower, a ramp, and a stairlift. I coordinated with her children’s school for additional support and ensured she had the right wheelchair. I also provided equipment to help her maintain important activities and supported her husband in his caregiving role.

This role involves problem-solving, teamwork, and collaboration.

As an OT at OCC, you’ll have the chance to make a real difference, with support, encouragement, and opportunities for growth and development.

Throughout my career at OCC, I’ve received genuine support and encouragement to grow and progress, which is why I’ve stayed for nearly 8 years.
