Obvious CV mistakes you can fix RIGHT NOW!

Most CVs that I go through are fine but I do come across a bunch of CVs every now and then that have mistakes that wouldn't take more than a few minutes to fix.

Please go over the points below and ensure you're not making these mistakes to increase your chances of a call back.

  1. No Email/Number; Yes, you would not believe how many times I've been left gobsmacked when people have not kept either or both of these two important information points in their resumes. My guess is they assume since they are emailing via their email, the recruiter/company/person will email them back but thats now how most resumes are screened. Instead they are bulk downloaded and looked at in bunches, at least that's how I go about it. Also CVs should be all enclosed meaning the person should be able to forward your CV with ALL the information needed to get in touch contained within it. Please do NOT skip over the contact information.
  2. Weird Formats; Yes, I get it you want to make a good impression but trust me when I tell you, a simple straightforward format is ALWAYS better than some multi-column overdose of text with multi-layering and color platelets etc. Your CV should be a straight forward story about who you are, what you've done and what value you can add. This might not be the case if you're a graphics designer and want to show your editing skills, but if you're an Engineer, Teacher, Sales person or a Fresh graduate, I'd suggest keeping the layout format as simple as possible.
  3. No LinkedIn Profile; It goes without saying when I look at a resume that piques my interest I always go and look at that persons LinkedIn to see if I can find something more about the candidate, it gives me great insight if I see comments/posts made by the candidate and gives me an overall impression of who they are. So not having a LinkedIn profile is a surefire way to not have that edge over someone who has and is using this platform in a pragmatic practical manner. It is also an excellent way to stay connected if the current opportunity was not right for you anyway, so make a profile.
  4. Typos; Please run a spell check. I am amazed at how simple English words are misspelt simply cause of laziness. With auto correct in literally the palm of our hands, spelling mistakes should not exists and especially on a document as important as a CV.
  5. Length; Ideal length of a CV should be 2 pages or in some extreme cases 3. No one will read a CV that is more than 4-5 pages long and it just shows you cannot summarize what you've done in that space. The longest resume that I have ever come across was 26 pages long. I kid you not. Needless to say that candidate was not shortlisted.
  6. Personal Statement/Objectives; Please don't write these, no one reads them and almost all of these are similar in nature and take up important real estate on your CV. Best is to write a summary of who you are instead (focus on the VALUE you can bring and highlight 2-3 things about you)
  7. Write the most recent experience first; When someone looks at their resume they are not reading a book that you need to mention your roots where you started your career from, you need to get straight to the point. I've seen many people write their resumes in the reverse order i.e. starting from the oldest then going on. Instead mention your most recent work first, THEN delve into your past.

Hope these help! Feel Free to share them as you see fit! :)
