Obsession: Your Key to success

Have you just ever sat there wondering how successful people do it?

Is it because they work harder and more efficiently? Or are they just innately more talented and gifted than everybody else, and the rest of us are simply doomed to a life of mediocrity and averageness?

You have probably noticed that some people just have a way of turning all their ideas into successful realities and well some of us have a hard time sticking to one good idea. It is like whatever they touch turns into gold and whatever we touch turns to dust.

The place where everything starts from is in our minds, with our ideas.

Ideas are constantly flowing through our brain, some quickly fade and are dismissed as soon as they enter our wandering minds and others go on to inspire us and catalyze personal and business growth.

But ideas lead to nothing if we don’t work on them, if we don’t put in the effort to turn them into successful realities.

How do we turn these ideas into a successful reality? How do we stay so focused that we summon up every bit of energy in us that will overrun every obstacle that we face?

There is only one way, and that’s obsession. If you want to succeed at whatever you want to do you’ve got to be obsessed and you can’t let anything stand in your way of achievement.

What makes people succeed is obsession. Successful people make it because they find their passion and become obsessed with it.

Obsession has been defined as “the domination of one’s thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image, or desire.” It is often seen as a negative thing by most people, but in terms of success, you need it and it is the perfect description of the mental state you need to have if you wish to succeed.

Until you become obsessed with your mission no one will take you seriously. Until the planet understands that you will not give up or go away, that you are 100 percent committed and have complete and utter conviction, you will not get the attention you need and the support you want.

Obsession ensures that you put all your energy toward this one outcome, this one idea, and somehow it returns to you.

Michael Moritz, the billionaire chairman of Sequoia Capital (investor in Google, Yahoo, PayPal and Airbnb) agreed with the idea of being obsessed in order for you to achieve great things while commenting on Sir Alex Ferguson’s achievements, he said:

“I think the word passion is the wrong word… The people who do remarkable things, whether it’s for a soccer club or creating and building a business, tend to be obsessed by what they are working on. The issue I have with the word ‘passion’ is it connotes that you need to be jumping up and down with enthusiasm at the top of your voice and brimming with excitement. But what people are really talking about is being completely captivated by an obsession that they simply cannot imagine conducting their life without.”

When you become obsessed with your idea, product, purpose or goal you will become equally obsessed with making it work and seeing it succeed.

Obsession is the key to overcoming the inevitable setbacks and frustration that come with entrepreneurship. Passion is necessary, but it’s not enough.

Finding your passion is a key ingredient to success, but indulging your obsession is the key to launching a legendary product or company.

So whatever your idea is, go for it with all of your might. Learn everything about it. Live it. Breathe it. Know it inside out.

Be obsessed about it. That will be your key to success.

What are you obsessed about? Do you agree with this approach? Leave a comment and share your thoughts in the comment section below?
