OBLIVIOUS, OBSESSED or OBSTINATE?
I have a question for you, leaders. Is it better for a leader, entrepreneur, CEO etc to be oblivious, obsessed or obstinate??
While you ponder that, let me give you some context. Today as I opened LinkedIn to check my newsfeed, I took a quick look at the news headlines down the right side of the page. I’ve noticed that those headlines, like those in most news media, seem to be geared to catch the attention and ‘hook’ the reader into clicking and reading.
That’s standard practice in all media, whether news or advertizing, of course. Another thing that we’ve probably all noticed is that the headlines are, for the most part, focused on the negative, creating fear. Driving people to click. And read. And react.?
How does this affect leaders who’re responsible for leading others, setting the tone in the organization and ensuring that good decisions are made?
The answer is: it depends. It depends on the leader’s mindset and focus. They’ll either be oblivious, or obsessed, or obstinate.
Oblivious:
This is the leader that may see the headlines but doesn’t really relate them to their own situation or circumstances, and probably doesn’t really care. They’re too busy fighting fires, managing and being busy to have the time or energy to worry about the news.

Obsessed:
This is the leader who looks at the headlines and immediately gets a knot in their stomach wondering how this is going to impact their job, their team, their business and whether there’s a way for them to avoid the negative consequences. Their actions and decisions are directed by fear.
Obstinate:
This is the leader who’s well aware of what the media is saying, yet resists the constant negativity with an obstinate belief in the positive. They believe in their product, they believe in their team, they believe in their customers and their vendors. They know there are pitfalls, but they also know that there’s always a way to recover. They refuse to believe that every harsh wind is going to blow them over. When faced with a mountain, they immediately look for the way around, over or through it.
The lens through which we view the things that are beyond our control affects how we handle those things that are within our control.
It affects what kind of leader we are, how we communicate, react, interpret and strategize. This is why it’s so important to have core values that are firm and which act as a compass determining our direction. Our vision may change, or adapt, over time, but our values remain constant. When we have that, we aren’t easily taken off-course.?
This is why, no matter what the headlines may say about whether people should or shouldn’t return to the office, we know that right now is always a good time for Optevo.?Inspired by a vision and built on human centered values, for people.?No matter the pro’s and con’s of where we work,?or the economy, or the global situation, it’s still all about people communicating, collaborating and creating, in ways that allow them to be productive and have a life… something that will always be ‘in fashion’.?

2 年Napoleon Hill's book "Think and Grow Rich" was written in 1937 during the Great Depression. There was much to despair about in those days but Mr. Hill looked at the world through a different lens. He taught others to believe in themselves and positive things would come their way. Holding firm to our values will get us through many storms, Andre.

2 年Really appreciate the context Andre Williams and have to agree with April Shprintz that one must choose which version serves one best in varying contexts … The obstinate may share the characteristics you’ve described but may well continue down the wrong path unwilling to pivot…

2 年You know me, I'm a hard core believer that the lens we view things affects our feelings which affects our actions which affects the external, and a leader magnifies this.

2 年Your final point Andre Williams was the best “it’s still all about people communicating, collaborating and creating, in ways that allow them to be productive and have a life… something that will always be ‘in fashion’.” And with that in mind leaders should trade all three O’s for a different one. OBJECTIVE. Does what I’m reading service to further my objectives to communicate, collaborate and create? When they keep that objective in mind then their daily reading is sure to be productive.
