Obesity: A Growing Health Concern – PM Narendra Modi’s Mission to Spread Awareness

Obesity is one of the biggest health challenges today, leading to serious diseases like diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and certain cancers. In his recent Mann Ki Baat address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the World Health Organization (WHO) data stating that in 2022, about 250 crore people worldwide were overweight or obese. He emphasized that reducing oil consumption in food is not just a personal choice but a responsibility towards our family and society.

To spread awareness about healthy eating and lifestyle changes, PM Modi has nominated 10 well-known personalities to lead the fight against obesity and encourage the public to consume less edible oil.

?

?? Why Is Obesity a Serious Concern?

Obesity is caused by an imbalance between calorie intake and calorie expenditure. Major contributing factors include:

?? Unhealthy diets – Eating processed foods, fast food, and sugary drinks increases calorie intake.

?? Sedentary lifestyle – Lack of physical activity leads to weight gain.

?? Excess oil consumption – Cooking with high amounts of oil and eating fried foods increases calorie intake.

?? Genetic & hormonal imbalances – Some people are more prone to weight gain due to genetics and metabolism issues.

?

Effects of obesity on health:

?? Increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and high cholesterol.

?? Leads to joint pain, breathing difficulties, and mental health issues like low self-esteem and depression.

?? Contributes to insulin resistance, making it harder to control blood sugar levels.

?

?? How Oil Consumption Contributes to Obesity

Many people don’t realize that excess oil in food is a hidden cause of weight gain.

?? 1 tablespoon of oil = 120 calories

?? Eating fried and processed foods daily leads to high calorie intake without essential nutrients.

?? Oils high in trans fats and omega-6 fatty acids promote fat accumulation and inflammation.

?? Excessive oil intake disrupts metabolism and increases LDL (bad cholesterol), leading to obesity-related diseases.

To control weight and improve health, it is essential to:

? Use less oil while cooking and choose healthier options like olive oil or mustard oil.

? Avoid deep-fried foods and opt for grilled, steamed, or baked dishes.

? Read food labels and limit processed and packaged foods high in unhealthy fats.
