OAT First Line Therapy for OSA???
John Viviano DDS D,ABDSM
Clinical Director at Sleep Disorders Dentistry Research and Learning Centre
There have been many recommendations made regarding Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) during this Flu Pandemic. Concern about spread of COVID-19 through PAP Mask leaks have resulted in changes in protocols followed by Fire Fighters and other First Responders, Fire Fighters themselves, have been restricted from sleeping at the Firehouse with their own personal PAP machine for fear of unknowingly spreading the virus, and professional societies have advised against the use of PAP for patients suspected of having COVID-19.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine currently recommends that if a PAP user becomes positive for COVID-19, they should speak to their physician about assessing risks and benefits of continuing to use the PAP device at home.
Taking things a step further, the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine currently recommends that an OA should be prescribed as a First-Line therapy for OSA during the COVID-19 Pandemic.(1)
