Nestled within the picturesque campus of Oakwood University lies a beacon of academic excellence and scientific prowess: the Biology and Chemistry Department. With a rich legacy spanning several decades, Oakwood University has consistently stood among the top ten institutions in the nation for its commitment to diversity and its remarkable track record in preparing students for medical school. At the heart of this legacy lies the Biology and Chemistry Department, a vibrant hub of learning, innovation, and discovery.
One of the hallmarks of the Biology and Chemistry Department at Oakwood University is its emphasis on hands-on learning and experiential education. Students are not merely passive recipients of knowledge but active participants in the scientific process. Through state-of-the-art laboratories, cutting-edge research facilities, and dedicated faculty mentors, students are empowered to explore the frontiers of biological and chemical sciences.
A standout feature of the department is its robust student research internship program. Under the guidance of esteemed faculty members, students have the unique opportunity to engage in groundbreaking research projects that address real-world challenges in fields ranging from molecular biology to organic chemistry. This hands-on experience not only deepens their understanding of scientific principles but also fosters critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a passion for inquiry.
The impact of Oakwood University's Biology and Chemistry Department extends far beyond the confines of its campus. Alumni of the program have gone on to make significant contributions to the medical and scientific communities, both nationally and internationally. From pioneering new treatments for diseases to unraveling the mysteries of the human genome, Oakwood graduates are at the forefront of medical clinical and research sciences, shaping the future of healthcare and improving countless lives around the globe.
One of those alumni who graduated from Oakwood University is Dr. Anton Dormer. He graduated from Oakwood University with a bachelors in Chemistry, Summa Cum Laude. Dr. Dormer then went on to complete his medical doctorate (M.D.) from UTESA School of Medicine and a Master's in Biomedical and Biotechnology from the University of Massachusetts - Boston with an emphasis in immunology and bioinformatics. He has started several biotechnology companies and most recently started a business incubator named BioLabShare, LLC for biotechnology, life sciences, and health technology firms; while promoting diversity through student internships in partnership with universities.
Cordell Dormer is also a graduate of Oakwood University in 2018 Magna Cum Laude with a 3.85 GPA. He was selected to join the BioLabShare, LLC executive board in 2023 as its senior vice president and general counsel. He is a graduate of George Washington University Law School in 2022. He is barred in Washington, DC. Dr. Anton Dormer was recently interviewed by Cordell Dormer about his excitement to become part of Oakwood University's scholarly excellence.?
Cordell Dormer: Good morning, Dr. Dormer, thank you for taking the time to meet with me today. I understand you recently had a meeting with the president of Oakwood University, regarding a potential partnership. Could you tell me more about that?
Dr. Anton Dormer: Good morning, It's my pleasure. First of all, I would like to say thank you to Dr. Leslie Pollard. What attracts alumni to give to a school is the passion and enthusiasm that the president has for their role as the leader of an academic institute. I saw how intently he listened and asked questions. I saw the genuine care and dedication to the overall well-being of the university. I had a very productive meeting with Dr. Pollard. We discussed the possibility of establishing a partnership between our business incubator, which focuses on supporting startup biotechnology, life sciences, and health technology firms, and the university's students for conducting medical research within a student internship program.
Cordell Dormer: That sounds intriguing. How did the idea for this partnership come about?
Dr. Anton Dormer: Well, it stemmed from recognizing the incredible talent pool that the university's students represent, particularly in the fields of biology and chemistry. We saw an opportunity to leverage their expertise and enthusiasm for scientific research by providing them with hands-on experience within our business incubator. In addition, Oakwood University's Biology and Chemistry Department has over the past several decades sent students to engage in research internships around the country. Therefore, this program is to give additional experiences to more Oakwood University students which will enhance the qualifications of those participating students and increase the prestige of Oakwood University. This can only lead to more students being attracted to the school not only to the Biology and Chemistry departments, but other departments of the school. Success breeds success.??
Cordell Dormer: That's fantastic. What specific benefits do you foresee this partnership bringing to both the university and the business incubator?
Dr. Anton Dormer: There are several benefits to be gained from this partnership. First and foremost, it provides an invaluable opportunity for the university's students to gain real-world experience in medical research, working alongside seasoned professionals within our incubator. This hands-on experience will not only enhance their academic learning but also better prepare them for future careers in the field. In addition, what makes BioLabShare, LLC unique is that it is the first and only diversely managed business incubator for startup biotechnology, life sciences, and health technology firms. I desire that the diversity that is inherent within its management will inspire the participating students to strive for more innovative accomplishments. I was inspired by the accomplishment of Dr. Percy Julian, who lived during the time of segregation and became the first Black self-made millionaire owning his own pharmaceutical company. I told myself when I was a teenager that if he could do so much with so little I could do more with the talents and opportunities that I have now. BioLabShare, LLC and this partnership are my give back to Oakwood University. The university gave me the foundation I needed to be successful and to believe in that teenager’s dream of building on the legacy of Dr. Percy Julian.?
Cordell Dormer: And what about the business incubator? How does it stand to benefit from this collaboration?

Dr. Anton Dormer: For our business incubator, this partnership represents a significant opportunity to tap into fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. By welcoming the university's students into our ecosystem, we are fostering a culture of collaboration and knowledge exchange that can lead to groundbreaking discoveries and advancements in medical science. Additionally, it enhances our reputation as a hub for fostering talent and innovation within the healthcare industry. In addition, I am going to provide students an opportunity to conduct research associated with my patent focusing on the development of immunotherapies for cancers.? Their research could lead to the formation of companies that will have its? beginning within the bioincubator to commercialized? therapeutic design to better human health.?
Cordell Dormer: It sounds like a win-win situation for both parties. How has the university responded to the proposal so far?
Dr. Anton Dormer: Dr. Pollard and the university have been incredibly supportive of the idea. The president expressed enthusiastic endorsement of the partnership during our meeting. They see it as a unique opportunity to provide their students with experiential learning opportunities that complement their academic studies and prepare them for successful careers in the medical field.
Cordell Dormer: That's wonderful to hear. What are the next steps in moving forward with this partnership?
Dr. Anton Dormer:? It is our goal to finalize the details of the internship program, including the scope of research projects, the selection process for student participants, and the logistics of integrating them into our incubator. Once everything is in place, we will be ready to launch the program and start reaping the benefits of this exciting collaboration. BioLabShare, LLC bioscience hub building has started and the building progress will be in three phases. The first phase is from 2024/2025 and that is the? building of the residences for the scientists who will part of this co-working and co-living community. The second phase, 2025/2026, is the building of the 40,000SF health and wellness center. The third and last phase is the building of the 15,000SF bioincubator. The goal, at the earliest, is to have the students? within the program by 2026. In addition, we plan to endow the Oakwood University student internship program to the tune of $2,000,000 by 2026. We desire to make this a? self-sustaining program that will continue to grow.????
Cordell Dormer: It sounds like you have a clear plan in place. I'm excited to see how this partnership unfolds and the impact it will have on both the university's students and our business incubator. Thank you for sharing your insights with me, Dr. Dormer.
Dr. Anton Dormer: My pleasure. Thank you for your support and enthusiasm for this initiative. I do not doubt that this partnership will be a resounding success for all involved parties.
