Oakville Museum Welcomes Visitors to Newly Restored Coach House

A piece of Oakville’s history has been restored into a beautiful community space.?

The Oakville Museum Coach House has a rich history dating back to 1899. The heritage landmark originally housed the horses, carriages and gardener’s cottage for Erchless Estate. It had many roles over the years, including the most recent use as a storage facility for the Museum.?

In March 2021, Oakville invested the Canada Community-Building Fund into a full rehabilitation of the Coach House. The space was enhanced, including the Gardner’s Cottage, to create a multi-purpose venue that protected the archeological and culture heritage significance of the Coach House and surrounding grounds.?

Today, the landmark serves as the Town of Oakville’s newest venue for museum and community programming. It’s home to the new exhibit Matter of Material where guests can learn about the Coach House’s rich history.?

The Coach House is also a hub for small private events, including meetings, receptions and celebrations. A key component of the restoration was the addition of an outside wall that has floor to ceiling glass doors that can be opened during events, connecting the room with the outdoor terrace area.

Since reopening in May of 2022, the Coach House has become an additional attraction on the Erchless Estate grounds to locals and visitors from across the country. Oakville Museum offers guided tours and exhibits, special events and programs that tell the fascinating stories of the town, as well as special events and programs such as summer camps and meditation in the park.
