O Chair !!
Thou art great. The powerful and mighty have used thee to look majestic. Seated on you, O Chair, they have looked like Gods! Infallible! Eternal! as they have swiveled this way and that way, gazing on the hoi polloi in attendance, bestowing smiles and largesse. Thou has given them size and stature.
O chair, thou has occupied the center position, at the head of the table, lovingly dusted and decorated. Shiny and bright. Commanding respect and absolute obedience. Many prostrating themselves before thee , in the hope of gaining favours and indulgence.
Why then , O chair are thou like this today? Broken, abandoned and forgotten.
How have things come to such a pass? Was it because thou got outmoded ? Or was it simply because the colour scheme changed and thou did not fit in anymore.
O chair, it was not thee, but the God whose posterior rested on thy cozy cushion. He was the power and the attraction. Thou were just a prop. When the God changed, all instruments of worship and deification were discarded with aplomb.
Thou were relegated to seating minions, shunted from room to room, not shiny anymore. Just a means to an end O chair. And finally when thee could not swivel and support anymore ,thou were dispatched to the backyard, to lay exposed to the sun, dust and rain.
But despair not O chair, for someone will find thee and give salvation. Thou shall rise from the ashes and once again find a place under the sun. This time not with Gods, but with lesser mortals. Maybe a chaiwallah or the local mechanic. He will mend thee and thou shall once again find purpose and meaning.
Thou shall be the bearer of lightweights, merrymakers and mavericks who will rest their rears on thy threadbare cushion with a thankful sigh while they enjoy their cuppa and samosa. Thou shall hear conversations from the heart. Not talk of power and position but of love and laughter. A myriad of souls will rest their posteriors on you - the daily wagers, the giggly college crowd, the hassled sales executive , the retired babu leisurely sipping tea and chewing the newspaper.
The chaiwallah will never abandon you . His jugaad will ensure that you fit in all kinds of settings and look inviting and restful. Gradually over a period of time thou will metamorph into a piece of kitsch art with coats of mismatched paint and patches of cloth. Maybe not a thing of beauty but of joy and comfort to all who seek the simple pleasures of life.
Which life will thou cherish more O chair..!!

2 年Very well written Ritu. Yes time, is indeed a great change agent. Our perceptions too change. I am reminded of the poem Ozymandias by the great poet P B Shelly. With time, times change !!
