NZPICS: Supporting Supply Chain Professionals

Vijay Todkar, General Manager of NZPICS

Supply Chain operations are constantly evolving. Rapid changes in supply and demand, advancements in technology, and disruptions (such as global pandemics, extreme weather events, and regional conflicts) highlight the need for the sector and professionals to remain constantly agile.

Wayne Fry chats with NZPICS Inc. (Association for Operations & Supply Chain Professionals) General Manager Vijay Todkar about the organisation, what is changing and how professionals can stay at the top of their game

What are the main challenges facing Supply Chain at the moment?

Challenges include a talent shortage of proficient supply chain professionals, New Zealand’s geography, limited economies of scale, geopolitical influences, weather disruptions, insufficient infrastructure, and rising freight costs.

Supply chains serve as the backbone of all industries and sectors, including government, healthcare, defence, agriculture, manufacturing, distribution and logistics, education, hospitality, entertainment, and beyond. They play a crucial role in ensuring the seamless flow of goods and services, driving the global economy forward.

New Zealand's geographical isolation, combined with its small population spread across two islands, presents both challenges and opportunities for supply chains. Supply chain management plays a pivotal role in facilitating the movement of products, including raw materials, semi-finished goods, and finished goods, to, from, and within the nation. Efficient supply chain management is not only crucial for overcoming logistical hurdles but also for maximising the potential of New Zealand's distinctive position in the global market. By streamlining processes, optimising transportation routes, and enhancing collaboration among stakeholders, supply chain management can unlock opportunities for New Zealand businesses to compete effectively on a global scale.

What trends do you see in Supply Chain over the next 12 months?

The global nature of supply chains exposes them to a multitude of disruptions, ranging from warfare and natural disasters to governmental policies and unpredictable weather patterns. In today's era characterised by constant change, rapid digitalisation, and heightened consumer expectations, supply chains must continually innovate to not only endure but also flourish amid these challenges. Flexibility, resilience, and proactive adaptation are essential traits for supply chains to navigate the complexities of the modern business environment and remain competitive in the global marketplace.

Upcoming trends include digital supply chains, big data and analytics, AI, investment in technology, visibility and traceability, disruption and risk management, agility and resilience, cybersecurity, sustainable supply chains, and the deglobalisation of supply chains.

?

How can New Zealand Supply Chain professionals aid their development and progress in their careers?

Our advice to supply chain professionals is to continuously invest in expanding their skill set and knowledge base to stay relevant in an ever-evolving industry. Keep abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and best practices through continuous learning, professional development opportunities, and networking with peers and industry experts.

?

What attracted you to join NZPICS?

As a Supply Chain professional, my driving force is the aspiration to create a significant impact within New Zealand's supply chain community. I am motivated by the opportunity to elevate the profile of the profession and its practitioners, both domestically and internationally.

I firmly believe that New Zealand has the potential to develop exceptional Supply Chain professionals who can excel on a global scale. Our unique island status, coupled with geographical isolation, vast landmass, and a small population, provide an ideal environment for nurturing and refining outstanding talent in the supply chain field.

?

What plans do you have for NZPICS over the next couple of years?

Our vision is for NZPICS to be the premier organisation for supply chain and operations management training in New Zealand, serving as the go-to destination for individuals and businesses seeking excellence in supply chain and operations management.

Despite servicing the New Zealand supply chain community for over four decades, we remain the “best-kept secret”. Moving forward, we are committed to actively enhancing the visibility of NZPICS, the supply chain profession, and the dedicated professionals within this field. Through strategic initiatives and targeted outreach efforts, we aim to raise awareness and recognition of the invaluable contributions made by our organisation and the supply chain community as a whole.
