New Year? New Start!
Heading back to work? The start of a new year is always a good time to examine your life and decide what direction you want to go in next. That’s why people make New Year’s resolutions – but while going to the gym every day or giving up pies might only last a month or so, buying a business is a long-term decision that will change your life. So what do you need to do first – and is a franchise a good option? Here are some tips.
Recent reports suggest that business confidence is on the rise again following the formation of the coalition Government late last year. A?Radio New Zealand report?said that ANZ's December monthly survey showed a net 33 percent of respondents expected the overall economy to improve over the next 12 months, the highest since March 2015. A net 29 percent said their own business outlook was positive, a two-year high.
How can buying a franchise change your life and help you achieve your goals? Those are the questions we answer in the latest 100-page issue of Franchise New Zealand magazine. We discuss why franchising is a real alternative to employment for both companies and individuals; suggest useful questions to ask franchisees, and explain how to reduce risk by getting the right advice. There are also interviews and profiles of franchises and franchisees. If you haven’t already got your copy, send for a free print copy here or download the digital version here.

Franchise New Zealand changes hands
Franchise New Zealand media has joined forces with Eden Exchange to take its media into a new era. ‘Eden Exchange is already heavily involved in the franchise sector in Australia, and is a great fit with our existing business,’ says Simon Lord, the founder of Franchise New Zealand.
‘Franchise New Zealand has always focused on promoting franchising, explaining the advantages and disadvantages of the franchise model, and educating potential buyers about what is available and what to look for. Eden Exchange continues that process at the next level, bringing together franchise buyers, re-sellers, franchisors and brokers in a way that streamlines the process for all concerned without taking away that all-important human element. We’re looking forward to learning from each other and enhancing our services under the new ownership.’
The Eden Exchange team will be attending the next Franchise Association After-Four in Auckland on 21 February, and look forward to meeting lots of franchise people during that week. Read more here.
And it’s business as usual for our team – the next issue of Franchise New Zealand is published on 28 March. In addition to our usual mix of advice and info, we’ll be looking at: Back to work; Starting up made easy; and Embracing sustainability. If you want your franchise or service to be included for the April-June quarter, contact us now.

News snippets from the franchise world
Mitre 10 is changing the names of some bathroom products because they are culturally insensitive. The imported 'Legacy' brand was using te reo Māori lake and river names for items such as toilet seats, toilet roll holders, robe hooks, grab rails and towel rails. The names, apparently used for five years, have now been covered with stickers using English language versions until current stock is sold.
The new coalition Government has changed the rules around 90-day trial periods for new employees, which may make life easier for franchisors and franchisees. Although the employment situation has eased slightly, enabling many hospitality outlets to open longer hours again, the complexities of recruitment have continued to impact small business without HR departments at a disproportionate level.
McDonald’s new beverage offshoot, CosMc’s, has reportedly exceeded expectations at its Illinois test store, attracting such large numbers that a police presence was required at times. The company’s data suggests CosMc’s saw more than double the number of visits than a typical McDonald’s recorded nationwide in December (despite not opening until 7 December). It also generated over triple the number of visits per square foot; the brand is roughly 2,500 square feet smaller than traditional stores.
