Something profound is happening in Kenya, and I want to share my thoughts on this energizing yet challenging period pregnant with a sting of pain and hope. Reflecting on the current situation, the anticipation of a new political consciousness and leadership evokes a sweet and sour taste.
Protests against the Finance Bill 2024 have united young Kenyans from various backgrounds, driven by shared hardships and a vision for a brighter future. Gen Z in Kenya is forging a path of unity and collective action, characterized by a strong sense of solidarity that transcends ethnic boundaries.
Their use of digital platforms has created an inclusive movement prioritizing economic justice, political reform, and social equity over tribal allegiances.
On the other hand, last Sunday, while preaching to the president at ACK church, a pastor unknowingly baptized Gen Z as "bees," giving a much-needed symbol to a rather faceless movement.
The symbolism of bees (Nyuki) offers the Gen Z-led movement a blueprint to work with. Bees, known for their unity, diligence, and relentless work ethic, mirror the collective spirit and resilience of the youth movement we are witnessing.
Bees operate in a highly structured and cooperative society. Each bee has a role, whether it's a worker, drone, or queen, contributing to the hive's well-being. This mirrors the collaborative spirit of Gen Z activists who come together to drive social and political change. Their unity, cutting across ethnic and social lines, is a testament to their collective strength and determination for a better future.
Bees are tireless workers, constantly collecting nectar and pollen. Similarly, Gen Z activists show remarkable diligence and persistence in advocating for justice and change. Their continuous protests, social media campaigns, and community organizing reflect the bees' unyielding spirit.
Bees communicate through complex dances and signals, efficiently relaying information. Gen Z uses digital platforms to mobilize support, coordinate actions, and disseminate information rapidly. This modern "dance" allows them to rally support and respond to developments in real-time.

Bees fiercely defend their hive against threats. This protective instinct parallels Gen Z's readiness to stand against injustices and defend their rights. The tragic death of Rex, a young protester, has strengthened their resolve, much like how bees protect their hive when threatened.
Just as a bee colony thrives on a well-defined structure, Gen Z can benefit from organizing their movement with clear roles and responsibilities. Defining roles within their activism, whether leaders, communicators, organizers, or supporters, can enhance their efficiency in the long run, underline, long run!
Bees contribute to the hive's success through numerous small actions. Gen Z should focus on sustained efforts and small victories that contribute to the larger goal. This approach maintains momentum, boosts morale, and demonstrates progress.
Leveraging social media and digital tools, including technologies to bypass surveillance and advance effective communication is crucial. Like the bee's dance, concise communication helps spread the message, mobilize supporters, and coordinate actions.
The hive mentality fosters a sense of community among activists. By creating supportive networks, Gen Z can ensure every member feels valued and integral to the movement. This community spirit drives resilience and sustained activism.
Embracing the symbolism of bees offers a blueprint from which the Gen Z movement in Kenya can draw valuable lessons in unity, diligence, communication, and defense. As we join hands to challenge the status quo and advocate for an inclusive political landscape, may the spirit of Nyuki guide and protect us.
Let the bees sting - but soon, hope lies in the honey ahead.
