NYK Delphinus under tow following engine room fire off US West Coast
The containership NYK Delphinus that suffered an engine fire off Monterey on the US West Coast is now under tow to offshore location west of Port Reyes.
The 2007-built, Liberia-flag, NYK Delphinus, operating on Ocean Network Express’ (ONE) Atlantic 5 service experienced an engine fire on 14 May about 50 miles miles west off the coast of Monterey.
On Sunday US Coast Guard said that Unified Command coordinating the safe transit of a containership 80 miles southwest of Big Sur to the Port of Oakland.
“The NYK Delphinus crew reported a continuous decrease in the temperature of the engine room’s surrounding bulkheads Sunday morning. No signs of smoke have been observed and all decks above the engine room are now accessible and have been fully ventilated,” USCG said.
On arrival at the location 80 miles southwest of Big Sur fire and salvage teams to conduct structural integrity inspections and examine damage to the engine room. On completion of inspection the containership is expected to berth at Port of Oakland berth 22.
ONE said in a customer advisory: “All the crew members are safe and currently no information available regarding cargo damage. As of now there is no oil leakage reported and investigations are ongoing and further information will be provided once available.”
