NYC Student Gets COVID-19 While In-Person Learning

In October, the largest school district in the country, New York City, announced its first #COVID19 positive student from in-person learning, via the New York Post.

The teenager attended a school in Brooklyn for students with autism and developmental disabilities, and staffers did not know about the student's positive test result until two days later.

One staff member of several who had to quarantine at home said there were problems with how it was handled and nobody knew what to do. Parents were not adequately notified.

Even more troubling, there are students at this school who cannot wear facemasks due to medical conditions or their disabilities. That issue, along with the school having ventilation system concerns, were addressed in August when 100 staffers sent letters to the New York Department of Education, as well as city and state officials outlining their concerns about the reopening plans.

And even more recently we are seeing NYC confronted with consecutive daily positivity rates overall, and officials telling the media they may need to close the schools down ahead of a second wave.

As I've been repeating in prior posts, we are still learning about COVID-19. For this to happen at a specialized school setting is extremely concerning.
