Come spring 2021, Manhattan’s west side along the Chelsea Piers area, will welcome a 2.4-acre landscape known as Little Island (also known as Pier 55). Located along the Hudson River, this public park will be a celebrated project for New Yorkers given the limited green recreational areas found in Manhattan.
The same firm which designed the “Vessel” art piece near Hudson Yards will also helm the creation of this park. The floating island will replace what’s left of Pier 54, the site where Titanic survivors arrived after they were rescued by boat in 1912.
So what can visitors expect? According to plans, there will be beautiful views of the Manhattan skyline along with tree-lined waking paths, lawns, and rolling hills. Additionally, there will be a 700-seat amphitheater which will host an array of live performances and educational workshops throughout the year. Both locals and visitors can thank media mogul Barry Diller and his fashion designer wife Diane von Furstenberg for funding the land through their Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation.
