Overview of the Upper East Side
Bordered by 59th Street, 96th Street, and Fifth Avenue, the area that became known as the Upper East Side was just a patch of Native American farmland and fishing grounds before the arrival of European settlers.

By the early 19th century, the area became a commercial center after the completion of the New York and Harlem Railroad. Residential developments surged in the 1880s as the country opened its doors to immigrants, with many Germans settling down in the area. It would later become a major site for new residential buildings which raised real estate values and turned the Upper East Side into an attractive enclave for luxury homeowners.?

The neighborhood was renowned for being the home of the country's high society families which built beautiful mansions and townhouses conveniently facing Central Park. Today, these buildings stand as a testament to the Upper East Side's reputation as the neighborhood where the Rockefellers and the Roosevelts made their mark in American history.?

Upper East Side Rent and Real Estate Prices
Being one of NYC's most affluent neighborhoods, the Upper East Side is a bank-breaker whether you are renting or buying a home. According to Rent Cafe, the average rent for an apartment in the neighborhood could run as high as $4,409 per month.

As for real estate prices, Realtor.com reports that the median home price in the neighborhood was $1.5 million as of October 2022. This is more or less within the median price range for the entire Manhattan borough.?

If you are thinking of settling down in the Upper East Side this year, expect to pay a lot more than you would in other Manhattan neighborhoods. Then again, the price may be well worth the cost because of the exciting things you can do there.
