NVMe-over-Fabric Delivers for Flash!

Storage disaggregation separates compute and storage to different nodes in order to allow for independent resource scaling and thus, better hardware resource utilization. We show that NVMe-over-Fabrics (NVM-oF) reduces the overheads of remote access to a bare minimum, thus greatly increasing the cost-efficiency of Flash disaggregation with Samsung NVMe SSDs. This paper provides the first, in-depth analysis of NVMe-oF, characterizing end-to-end performance as well as the resource overheads on both the host and the target. Congratulations to the NVMe Working Group and community for developing an excellent architecture for a new flash paradigm!
