?Recovering from addiction is a journey that encompasses physical, emotional, and mental healing. Nutrition plays a crucial role in this process. It is a scientific fact that a balanced diet can help restore your body, improve your mood, and support overall well-being. Here are some nutrition guidelines that have helped me and I believe they can help you too on your recovery journey.????????????????????????????????????????????
1. Hydration is Key:.????????????
?Start with the basics: drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated is essential for detoxification and overall health. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day. Herbal teas and infused water with fruits and herbs can be great alternatives. However, our body loses water and essential electrolytes, especially during exercise and sweating therefore drinking water alone is not as effective for optimal hydration. We need to add electrolytes from healthy sources to our water. Today I consume between 60-100 ounces of water a day. I use cucumbers, lemons, mint, and other foods and herbs to add flavor. About 24 ounces of my water intake contains about 1625+ mg of electrolytes. ??????????????????
2. Incorporate Whole Foods: ????????
?I have learned to focus on whole, unprocessed foods. Processed foods keep my body inflamed and acidic. These include:???????????????????????????
????Fruits and Vegetables: Rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, they support your immune system and overall health.
????Whole Grains: Brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat bread provide sustained energy and fiber.???
????Lean Proteins: Chicken, fish, beans, and tofu are excellent for muscle repair and maintenance.
????Healthy Fats: Avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil are good for brain health and hormone production.???????????????????????????????
??Gluten and GMO-Free: As I learn to listen to my body, I realize that being free from gluten and GMOs also helps keep my body from inflammation. ????????????????????????
?3. Balanced Meals.???????????????????
??Make sure each meal includes a balanced mix of macronutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. I find this balanced approach and protein pacing have helped stabilize my blood sugar levels and curb cravings. ????????????????????????????
??Here's an example meal plan:????
????Breakfast: Greek yogurt with fresh berries and a sprinkle of chia seeds. You can add in high-protein cereal or shakes. ??????????????????????
????Lunch: Grilled chicken salad with mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and olive oil vinaigrette.???
????Dinner: Baked salmon with quinoa and steamed broccoli.
????Snacks: Apple slices with almond butter, or a handful of mixed nuts.??????????????????????????????????????????????????
4. Supportive Nutrition Options
??Life gets busy and sometimes, finding time to prepare balanced meals can be challenging. Incorporating convenient, nutrient-dense options can help. For instance, shakes or meal replacements, rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals can be a practical solution for maintaining balanced nutrition when you’re on the go or need a quick meal or protein snack.??????????????????????
5. Mindful Eating ???????
??Practice mindful eating by paying attention to your hunger and fullness cues. Avoid distractions like TV or smartphones during meals to fully enjoy, appreciate, and pay attention to what the food may trigger in your body. ??????????
??This practice can help prevent overeating, promote better digestion, and enhance overall health.??????????????????????????????????????????????
6. Avoid Triggers ????????????????????

??Certain foods and beverages can trigger cravings, inflammation, and other health issues. ?Limit or avoid the following:???????????????????
????Sugary snacks and drinks can cause blood sugar spikes and crashes.???????????????????????????
??Caffeine and energy drinks: Can increase anxiety and interfere with sleep. ???????????????????????????
????Processed foods: Often high in unhealthy fats, sugars, and additives.?????????????????????????????????????????
7. Supplements and Vitamins.??
?Consider taking high-quality supplements to fill any nutritional gaps, especially during the early stages of recovery. Important supplements might include:
??Multivitamins: To ensure you're getting essential nutrients.??
??Omega-3 fatty acids: For brain health and reducing inflammation.???????????????????
??Probiotics: To support gut health.????????????????????????????
??Adaptogens: To help with physical and mental stress.????????????
? 8. Consistency is Crucial
?Consistency in your eating habits can significantly impact your recovery. Eat regular meals and snacks. This behavior can help keep your metabolism steady and prevent extreme hunger.???????????????????????????????
?If we follow these nutrition guidelines we can support our recovery journey and enhance our overall well-being. Remember, recovery is a holistic process. Taking care of our body through proper nutrition is a powerful step towards a healthier, happier life. If we stay committed and remember that each healthy choice brings us closer to our wellness goals, we are on our way to living our best life!???????????????????????????
?I cannot say that I do this perfectly. One of my addictions is overeating/binge eating. However, when I follow this plan of action and work with my recovery sponsor, my dietician/friend, and ask God in prayer to help me, I am pretty much on the right path most of the time.
