Welcome to the sixth episode of NutraNews. There seems to have been a lot of innovation within the industry over the past couple of weeks, and I am eager to provide you with a few of my key highlights. We will look at some amazing advancement utilizing AI to monitor antioxidants from this weeks SME of the Week, new innovative nutraceutical delivery sytems, recent investments, and then key probitoic and botanical news.

Improving Nutraceutical Deliveries.

There are a lot of challenges around supplement absorption and bioavailability within Dietary Supplements. Low absorption rates can hinder the bodies ability to receive the full benefit from essential and beneficial nutrients. In an effort to tackle this issue Carl Germano, CNS, CDN , the VP / Chief Business Officer at Verdant Nature , has announced the creation of VN-SNEDDS, a delivery system that has been designed to improve the absorption of Dietary Supplements.

Verdant Nature are a biotech company that focus on developing and providing advanced delivery systems for functional ingredients with low bioavailability. Through the use of application of science and engineering, Verdant Nature seeking o improve health aging, cognitive, neurological and whole-body metabolic health.

Some benefits of the new VN-SNEDDS delivery system will increase bioavailability by up to 4800%, allow nutraceuticals to become water dispersible and tasteless, and increase absorption in the small intestine.

The delivery system can be utilized for designing and formulating a range of dietary supplements such as tablets, gummies, capsules, shots, functional foods, creams etc.

Recent Investments:

FYTEXIA , which is a company owned by ABF Ingredients (ABFI), has made an investment in Vital Solutions GmbH , a German firm that specializes in natural science-based ingredients for use in dietary supplements and functional foods. This move comes two years after Fytexia's acquisition of BNatural, a European leader in brown propolis extracts, and further strengthens Fytexia's position as a leader in science-based polyphenols that address new health categories like gut health and cognitive functions.

By investing in Vital Solutions, Fytexia aims to expand its presence in the nutritional ingredient market and accelerate its development. This strategic acquisition reflects ABFI's ambition to grow Fytexia and increase its impact in the nutritional ingredient market.

Matthieu Arguillere , the Managing Director of Fytexia, explains how the "successful track record of introducing innovative health ingredients to international markets" by Vital Solutions. CEO of Vital Solutions, Dr. Sybille Buchwald-Werner , believes that the investment will allow them to accelerate the commercial development of their portfolio, which has also been agreed by Fabienne Saadane-Oaks , the CEO of ABFI.

Probiotic News:

Gnosis by Lesaffre , a well-known industry player that utilize fermentation to develop nutritional yeasts, probiotics, and prebiotics, have just launched their new probiotic range. The range is called LifeinU L.Rhamnosus GG350, and will be utilize Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG to support digestive health by providing a balanced gastrointestinal flora.

The Global Marketing Director, Philippe Caillat , has said that the new approach allows Gnosis by Lesaffre to "offer customers a truly integrated and holistic approach to microbiome health".

I am keen to see how Marc Philouze , Managing Director, continues to lead Gnosis by Lesaffre and the further innovation they take within the market.

Rising Popularity of Botanicals:

Talking to Nutrition Insight, Dr Anna Plaskova, from Tomas Bata University, talks about recent studies and reviews of the Botanical market.

She explains that a recent review has found that plant extracts rich in active compounds present food manufacturers with an opportunity to develop innovative food products that meet consumer demand for healthier and more eco-friendly options.

The review explores a range of applications for water and ethanol-water plant extracts in various food categories, including meat products, pastries, beverages, and dairy. The authors note that antioxidant-rich plant extracts can improve food safety by replacing synthetic antioxidants linked to safety and health issues. Rosemary extract and Japanese knotweed extract have shown promise in inhibiting oxidative rancidity and replacing nitrite preservatives, respectively.

The review concludes that plant extracts are likely to continue gaining popularity in the food industry, particularly as plant-based diets become more prevalent. It is also stated that the global supplement and sports nutrition launches with botanical ingredients grew 32% annually from 2017 to 2021.
