In an ever-evolving professional landscape, the concept of a sustainable career has become increasingly relevant. As defined by Newman in 2011, a sustainable career is not just about preserving and enhancing human capital; it's about restoring and maintaining balance in one’s life. At the heart of a sustainable career is health, happiness and productivity. It is important to remember that despite the ever increasing demands on our productivity, this should not come at the expense of health or happiness; in a sustainable career path these should be mutually reinforcing.???
How can we ensure as organisations we create environments conducive to sustainable careers?
Researchers Kossek et al. (2014) and McDonald and Hite (2018) suggest that sustainable careers must provide the following:?
Opportunities for Renewal and Continuous Learning
Central to a sustainable career is the need for opportunities that allow for personal and professional renewal. The modern workplace must be a space for continuous learning, helping individuals to remain flexible and adaptable to change. This adaptability is crucial for preparing for the unexpected twists and turns of one's career journey.
Integration of Experiences and Economic Security
A sustainable career is one that integrates various life experiences and sectors, providing a sense of completeness and meaning. It's not just about job satisfaction but also about how well one's career resonates with their personal values and life goals. Moreover, it must provide sufficient economic security, ensuring that individuals can maintain a stable and rewarding life.

Aligning Career with Personal Values and Interests
The alignment of one’s career with their values and interests is pivotal. A sustainable career should evolve to reflect changes in one's needs and interests over time, ensuring that work remains fulfilling and aligned with personal growth and development.
Proactivity, Resilience, and Career Adaptability
Proactivity and career adaptability are essential components of a sustainable career. It's about taking charge of one's career path and being resilient in the face of challenges. This resilience is crucial for the career's longevity, representing a journey punctuated by periods of rejuvenation and renewal.
Recognising Interdependency
A key aspect of sustainable careers is the recognition of interdependency – the understanding that the subsystems of work, home, and community are intertwined. Successful careers are those where these elements are supported and balanced, rather than considered as separate entities.
Emphasising Social Justice
Lastly, the concept of social justice plays a vital role in sustainable careers. This involves advocating for decent work for all and striving towards workplaces and careers that are inclusive and equitable. It's about creating environments where diversity is celebrated, and everyone has access to opportunities that allow them to thrive.
In conclusion, a sustainable career is more than a job; it's a journey that integrates personal and professional growth, resilience, and a commitment to lifelong learning. It requires an environment that values flexibility, inclusivity, and the interdependency of various life aspects. By focusing on these elements, individuals can craft careers that are not only fulfilling but also sustainable in the long run.
