Nurturing Resilience: How Innovative Peanuts Support Global Food Security
As the climate changes, even short bursts of extreme weather have long-term impacts on global crop production. Indeed, since 1961 global cropland availability per capita has plummeted from 0.45 hectares to 0.21 hectares in 2016.
That, in turn, threatens our food security. For example, a drought can not only create short-term problems but can also damage soil quality and threaten the long-term survival of plants.
Luckily, peanuts are a hardy, year-round crop, and when grown in the right locations, are a substantial source of protein. Their deep root systems and adaptability to various soil types make them resilient in changing climates.
Thanks to global research efforts, we are now able to supply farmers with healthy and resilient seeds that are disease-, insect-, and even drought-resistant. We select the best varieties depending on growing conditions and intended use, in order to maximize output.
These advanced seeds not only help increase yields but also reduce production costs. This allows farmers to provide their families with more protein while retaining produce for sale, boosting their livelihoods.
Moreover, the use of these resilient seeds reduces the amount of pesticide needed, supporting environmental health and contributing to sustainable farming practices. By investing in such innovations, we actively contribute to the stability of our food systems and the health of our planet.
It’s just another way in which we give back to the peanut ecosystem. Find out more about the role of peanuts in global food security here.
