As we navigate the dynamic landscape of project management, I've been reflecting on my journey and the ways I've contributed to growing the competences of PMOs and project management communities in my previous roles. It's been an exciting ride, and I thought I'd share a snippet of my experience with you all.
In my roles, I've always believed in the power of collaboration and continuous improvement. One noteworthy example that stands out is a cross-PMO improvement project I had the privilege to lead. The goal was clear - enhance team competences and foster a culture of excellence across our project management community.
Step 1: Understanding the Landscape
First things first, I initiated a comprehensive assessment. I wanted to understand the strengths and areas that needed improvement. This involved engaging with PMO leaders and project managers in candid conversations, gathering insights, and identifying common pain points.
Step 2: Building Bridges
The next step was all about fostering collaboration. I facilitated workshops and cross-functional team sessions to encourage open communication. We shared best practices, lessons learned, and collectively identified solutions. It was amazing to see the wealth of knowledge that existed within the teams.
Step 3: Customizing Solutions
Not every PMO is the same, and that's the beauty of it. I worked on developing customized solutions that addressed the specific needs of each PMO while aligning with the overarching organizational goals. This personalized approach ensured that the improvements were practical and applicable.

Step 4: Implementing Change
Change is often met with resistance, so a key aspect was ensuring a smooth transition. We rolled out the changes gradually, providing training sessions, resources, and ongoing support. It was crucial for everyone to feel confident and comfortable with the new practices.
Results?
The impact was remarkable. Teams were more aligned, communication improved, and project delivery became more efficient. The cross-PMO collaboration didn't just enhance competences; it created a culture of continuous improvement.
A Personal Takeaway:
Reflecting on this experience, what stands out is the power of collaboration. In our fast-paced world, the ability to leverage collective knowledge is a game-changer. As project management professionals, we are not just managers; we are facilitators of growth and enablers of success.
