Nurturing Future Engineers
It’s #NationalEngineersWeek with DiscoverE so we’ve rounded up a few stories on how engineering shapes our world and drives progress. From the creation of cities powered entirely by electricity to creative channels diversifying the industry, we’re celebrating the impact engineers of today and tomorrow have on?our planet and communities.
1. DLR Group Engineering Volunteers Strengthen Future City Competition
Future City, a program of DiscoverE, held its annual competition across the United States last month. Fitting the #Eweek2024 theme – "Welcome to the Future" – students were asked to research, design, and build models of 100% electrically powered cities. We saw the results firsthand as 30 DLR Group engineers volunteered as moderators and judges across multiple cities. Without exception, the students' technological fluency was admirable. Here's a look at what these students created and what our team has to say about it all.
2. Reimagining the Possible to Diversify Engineering
During National Engineer's Week, we emphasize the transformative impact of engineering and the critical need for diversity within the field. By organizing outreach events at local schools, we aim to inspire the next generation with our design knowledge through STEM activities and examples from the real world. ?Senior Associate and Structural Engineer Liz Heck, CE, SE, outlines strategies to address the gender gap in the AEC industry, focusing on inclusivity and diversity.

3. Celebrate Engineering: Encourage, Innovate, Collaborate, and Contribute
DLR Group conducts outreach events all year round to introduce students across the country to the field of engineering. Our goal is to show students the work we do and its significance. By presenting real engineering projects, we demonstrate their impact on developing innovative solutions – inspiring young minds to pursue their interests and use their unique perspectives to create positive changes. Learn about the different ways we’re committed to nurturing future engineers from Associate and Structural Designer Julianna Burke.
4. Innovation Campus Designed for Career Exploration
The need for career and technical education has never been greater. But how do we prepare and plan for the world of work when we live in an ever-evolving society and the industry is changing? The Cherry Creek Innovation Campus design in Colorado is providing insight.
5. Enriching Career Education for Statewide Transformation
The Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, is enhancing its facilities by introducing the new Career Connect Campus. This campus is designed to accommodate a wide range of current and future career-focused programs for high school students and adult learners throughout the state – fostering skill development in various industries. Learn how this learning environment is designed to deliver education via immersion.
