In the hallways of River Forest High School, in Hobart, Indiana, amidst the bustling energy of adolescence, a young leader began to emerge. In the pivotal 10th grade, I found myself embarking on a journey that would shape my understanding of leadership, community, and collaboration in profound ways.
It all started with an unexpected opportunity – being selected as a delegate for the Hugh O'Brien Youth Foundation (HOBY). This experience served as my initiation into the world of leadership, providing a platform to learn the basics and essentials that would guide me in the years to come.
HOBY brought together 10th graders from across the state of Indiana, each with their own unique backgrounds and perspectives. For the first time, I was exposed to a diverse array of opinions and mindsets, offering invaluable insights into the essence of leadership. Interacting with peers from different regions expanded my horizons, challenging me to reconsider preconceived notions and fostering a spirit of inclusivity.
As I returned to River Forest High School, I carried with me the lessons gleaned from my HOBY experience. Despite having held leadership positions before – serving as Class Vice President and Treasurer of the Student Council – this journey marked a significant milestone in my personal growth. It was a catalyst for introspection, prompting me to reassess my understanding of what it truly means to lead.

One of the most profound realizations was the importance of inclusivity and collective decision-making. True leadership, I learned, isn't about imposing one's will but rather about creating space for everyone to contribute. It's about fostering an environment where diverse voices are heard and respected, even when faced with difficult choices.
Moreover, the HOBY experience instilled in me a sense of thoughtfulness and deliberation. While I may not have had all the answers, I understood the value of approaching challenges with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Leadership, I discovered, is as much about humility and growth as it is about decisiveness and action.
In the years that followed, I continued to build upon the foundation laid during my early leadership journey. Whether in academic pursuits, extracurricular activities, time served in the military, or community initiatives, I sought to embody the principles of inclusivity, collaboration, and integrity that had been instilled in me.
Looking back, I am grateful for the formative experiences that shaped my journey as a leader. From the halls of River Forest High School to the statewide gatherings of HOBY, each encounter served as a steppingstone towards personal and professional growth. As I continued to navigate the complexities of leadership, I carried with me the lessons learned during those early years – a testament to the transformative power of youth and the enduring impact of community.
