VAME: Volunteer Acquisition, Management and Engagement

As the Fundraising and Event Specialist in an organisation of 4,200 employees, one of the most valuable resources lies in our people. Harnessing the passion and skills of internal volunteers not only strengthens team cohesion but also enhances our ability to make a meaningful impact in the community. Here are some effective strategies for internal volunteer acquisition, management, and engagement:

  1. Promote a Culture of Giving: Foster a culture of philanthropy and volunteerism within the organisation by highlighting the importance of community engagement and social responsibility. Incorporate volunteer opportunities into company events, meetings, and communications to encourage participation and create a sense of shared purpose. This takes time. Be consistent and persistent.
  2. Identify Volunteer Champions: Identify enthusiastic and influential employees who can serve as volunteer champions or ambassadors within their departments or teams. Empower these individuals to promote volunteer opportunities, share their experiences, and inspire their colleagues to get involved.
  3. Effective Onboarding: Develop a streamlined onboarding process to welcome volunteers into the fold, providing them with an event brief that is contextualised to their roles and responsibilities. Provide orientation sessions, and mentorship opportunities to ensure volunteers feel valued, supported and prepared to contribute.
  4. Role Alignment: Match volunteers with roles that align with their skills, interests, and availability. Have conversations to gauge their preferences and strengths, and assign roles accordingly. By placing volunteers in roles that resonate with them, you can enhance their engagement and overall satisfaction.
  5. Clear Communication: Establish open and transparent communication channels to keep volunteers informed, engaged, and motivated. Provide regular and relevant updates through email and group chats. Encourage two-way communication and feedback to foster a sense of inclusion and accountability.
  6. Recognition and Appreciation: Recognise volunteers' contributions and celebrate their achievements publicly and privately. Express gratitude through personalised thank you notes and certificates of appreciation. Highlight volunteer stories and testimonials on organisation's platforms or social media to showcase their impact and inspire others to get involve.
  7. Feedback and Evaluation: Invite feedback from volunteers to assess their experiences, gather insights, and identify areas for improvement. Use this feedback to refine strategies, tactics and enhance the volunteer experience moving forward.

By implementing these comprehensive strategies for volunteer acquisition, management, and engagement (VAME), organisations can cultivate a dedicated and empowered volunteer base that fuels the success of fundraising events and advances the mission of the organisation.

Let's continue to harness the collective power of volunteers to create positive change and make a lasting impact in our communities.

Thank you for the great article Magdalene St Clare! Prompted reflection ??and I totally agree with you, our people are our foundation for volunteering and it’s critical we make the time to know them well - to leverage their best - their passion, knowledge and skills. Everyone brings a unique skillset. Great reminders in your article to refresh or reignite volunteer programs in our workplaces and for events. ????????
