Nurses Day - A tribute to the tireless workforce holding up the healthcare industry

Friday, 12 May 2023 is the INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY. This is a tribute to NURSES across the world, who are often unsung heroes but whose contribution, plays the most important role in nursing a patient, aiding their recovery, and giving them the joys of good health.

The Crimean War of 1854 was a decisive one in many aspects and the one that stands out is that it gave the world the profession of NURSING and it brought to the fore, a lady - FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE – who is considered the Mother of modern nursing.

Florence Nightingale was the first to insist on the importance of building trusting relationships with patients, empathize with them and communicate with them – and these go a long way in healing the wounds and relieve suffering.

The demands of an increasingly complex healthcare industry has changed the landscape for nurses. Nurses play an important role in today’s world. They are advocates for health and healthy lifestyle, they play an important role in educating about illnesses and how to prevent them, and most importantly they provide care and support which is particularly important in rehabilitating patients.

Today, nurses, both women and men, are hailed as the true heroes of healthcare, often placing their own comforts after the needs of patients they care for day in and day out.

The nursing profession is often taken for granted. People do not realize the importance of nurses until they need their services. Nurses are an integral part of the healthcare system and play a vital role in patient care.?

So, the next time you visit a hospital, say a small thank you to the nurses. It is their perseverance, patience and empathy which is nursing patients back to good health.?
