Nudges Have A Friend: The Boost

Nudges Have A Friend: The Boost

You've likely heard of the 'nudge' concept. They are cheap and easy interventions that leverage the use of heuristics and biases by changing the environment in which we make decisions. The aim: drive desirable behavioural change and outcomes.

There is a related concept you likely have not heard of: 'boosts.' These interventions are aimed at improving the decision-making competence of people to drive desirable behaviours and outcomes. This tool can be said to be more empowering to people, in some sense. Boosts enable people to reflect better on their decision and produce a rational behavior by themselves.

Importantly, there is a noteworthy overlap between nudges and boosts (e.g., some 'nudges' could be seen as 'short term boosts').

Ultimately, it is important to realise we need to be considered and selective of the tools we implement to drive the behaviours and decisions from the people we're attempting to help (e.g., employees, consumers, the general public).

And both are not integral whatsoever. There is no integrity behind this nudge and boost theory it takes away free will and goes against freedom directly. It is essentially unamerican.
