NTT Docomo to launch 5G, March 25
NTT Docomo has confirmed that will be deploying commercial 5G in Japan on 25 March.
Once live, the service will achieve a maximum data rate of 3.4Gbps and in June the downlink will increase to a maximum 4.1Gbps.
Covering approximately 150 locations nationwide at its launch before expanding to all districts by June 2020. More than 500 cities are expected to have access to Docomo's 5G service by March 2021.
Additionally, by the end of June 2021 the company said it will have 10,000 base stations, and 20,000 by the end of March 2022.
“Going forward, DOCOMO is committed to steadily expanding and enhancing its 5G network service to create new value for society and to make customers' lives more convenient and fulfilling,” the company said.
In order to access these new highspeed services, customers will have to use one of Docomo’s 5G-compatible devices that includes seven models in the Docomo Smartphone series and a mobile Wifi router. All aforementioned models will also be compatible with Docomo's existing LTE network.
In related news, earlier this month Docomo Pacific, a subsidiary of NTT Docomo, was awarded 28 licences during the FCC’s auction 103, that has made 3,400MHz of millimetre wave spectrum available in the upper 37GHz, 39GHz and 47GHz bands, for approximately $37 thousand.
The auction had a total of $7,558,703,201 in net bids, with 28 bidders winning a total of 14,142 of 14,144, or more than 99.9%, of available licenses.
“The successful conclusion of Auction 103—the largest amount of spectrum offered in an auction in U.S. history—is one more significant step the FCC has taken toward maintaining American leadership in 5G,” said FCC chairman Ajit Pai.
