NTSB Preliminary Report on Pompano Beach Helicopter Incident Unveiled
The NTSB released its initial findings on the Eurocopter EC135T1 crash near Pompano Beach, Florida on August 28, 2023. The pilot reported hearing a "bang" during an initial climb, observing rising turbine outlet temperature (TOT) on the No. 1 engine, and an illuminated engine fire button. The aircraft, which had an in-flight fire near the engine exhaust and tailboom attach point, descended into an apartment building after the tailboom partially separated in-flight. The accident resulted in two fatalities and two injuries. Further examination and data retrieval from the digital engine control unit and other components are pending. Despite the ruling, the CMA highlighted errors in the CAA's calculations, specifically in provisions for exceptional events impacting passenger counts, but foresees only a minor net effect on the final charge amount.
