The Uganda Red Cross Society has reported widespread devastation and displacement in Bweramule Sub-County, Ntoroko District, following severe flooding caused by the overflowing of River Semuliki.
Hundreds have been displaced across several sub-counties, including Bweramule, Butungama, Rwebisengo, Kanara, Kibuku, and Rwebisengo Town Council. Aerial surveys reveal widespread destruction, with abandoned homes and significant property damage.
"Our assessment teams are facing challenges in reaching many areas due to the flooding, making the situation even more critical," according to Uganda Red Cross Society.
The floods have left many farmers with no land to graze their animals, forcing them to share the few elevated spots left by the roadside with other displaced families and their livestock.
Leaders in Ntoroko District are appealing to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to allocate a portion of land in the Tooro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve to address this urgent need.
According to Dr. Patrick Businge, the district production officer, more than 90,000 of the district's 185,000 cattle are in submerged areas, highlighting the critical need for alternative grazing options.
