NSN India Interface: Skill Development in Food Processing Industry and Global Skill University leads the way in WILP, Model Skill Loan Scheme and More

Hello readers,

In this edition of NSN India Interface, we are focusing on the dynamic world of the food processing industry and its evolving landscape. India’s extensive agricultural resources and rapidly growing consumer market present a unique opportunity to enhance the sector through skill development and cutting-edge technologies such as AI and ML. We explore how FICSI is at the forefront of this transformation, from ensuring ingredient traceability and improving supply chain efficiency to enhancing quality control and logistics within the food processing industry.

In addition, we shine a spotlight on AISECT and Scope Global Skills University (SGSU) and their notable contributions to work-integrated learning. Their recent Kaushal Charcha event, held on World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) 2024, exemplifies their dedication to equipping young people with the skills needed for emerging career opportunities. This event underscores the importance of innovative skill education and robust industry partnerships in shaping the future workforce.

FICSI’s Role in Skill Development in Food Processing Industry

“The food processing industry is a dynamic field with vast potential. Prioritizing skill development and integrating modern technologies like AI and ML are crucial for keeping pace with industry evolution.” – Mr. Sunil Kumar Marwah, CEO, Food Industry Capacity and Skill Initiative (FICSI).

Food processing students typically complete a four-year B.Tech program in food technology. However, to better align with evolving industry needs and ensure job readiness from day one, we are updating the curricula. This proactive approach will help graduates meet current industry expectations and enhance their employability without requiring extensive additional training from employers.

To address this, we are developing a “Campus to Career” program focusing on 8 to 10 key areas essential for graduates entering the workforce. We are currently working on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) into food processing education. Many current food processing graduates have little knowledge of AI and ML, even though these technologies are revolutionizing the industry globally.

To learn more about FICSI’s role in skill development in Food Processing Industry, opportunities in baking business, capacity building for spices industry, AI and machine learning in food processing, importance of capacity building in MSME in the food processing industry, apprenticeships in food processing, and more, we spoke with Mr. Sunil Kumar Marwah, CEO, Food Industry Capacity and Skill Initiative (FICSI).

The food processing sector is not just about transforming raw materials; it’s about cultivating innovation, creating jobs, and empowering millions. At the heart of this transformation is the urgent need for skilled manpower. This article delves into the initiatives shaping India’s food processing workforce and the immense opportunities it presents.

A Glimpse into India’s Food Processing Industry

India is a land of opportunities in the food processing sector, attracting 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and serving as the largest producer of several agricultural commodities. With a 1.38 billion consumer market and a retail market projected to reach USD 1.3 trillion by 2025, the potential for growth is immense. India ranks as the second-largest producer of fruits and vegetables globally and contributes about 25% to global milk production. Additionally, it leads in producing spices, with over 11 million tonnes produced in 2022-23. Despite these achievements, the food processing industry remains nascent, processing less than 10% of total food output.?
