Case Study: Proximity Collision Warning, Fatigue Monitoring and Fleet management software Implementation in Mining Trucks?

Background:

A large private mining company Narayani Sons India Private Limited operating in a remote region in Orissa faced challenges with safety incidents involving their fleet of heavy mining trucks. These trucks operate in harsh conditions, often in remote areas with limited visibility and challenging terrain. The major problems that the company faced were rear end collisions, collisions due to driver fatigue, inability to track vehicles due to low network region, and inability to see during harsh weather and dusty environments. To address these issues, the company decided to implement radar-based proximity warning and AI camera based fatigue monitoring systems in their mining trucks.

Implementation:

The company partnered with Starkenn technologies specialising in safety solutions for heavy-duty vehicles. They installed a comprehensive suite of ADAS solutions, including:

  1. Safe (Proximity Warning System): Utilising Short range radar sensors at the rear and front of the vehicle, this system detects objects in the vehicle’s path and provides audio-visual warnings to the driver to avoid potential collisions.
  2. Attention (Fatigue Monitoring System): Utilises facial recognition and predictive behaviour analysis using AI powered camera sensor devices to detect signs of driver fatigue or distraction, providing alerts to the driver and mining fleet operators/managers.
  3. Stark-I (Fleet Management Software): The data from the devices such as GPS, Proximity warning system, fatigue monitoring system is sent to the cloud and all the analytics like location, alerts, distance, time is shown on the software.?

Results:

After the implementation of the safety suite, the mining company saw significant improvements in safety performance:

  1. Reduction in rear end collisions: The frequency of rear end collisions, decreased 70% following the implementation of proximity warning system.
  2. Improved Driver behaviour detection: Fatigue Monitoring System helped with driver awareness and detection of signs like drowsiness, distraction reducing not only accidents but also notifying the fleet manager of driver’s fatigue to take further due course of action and help driver’s be alert, drive safe and switch incase of fatigue.
  3. Cost Savings: The reduction in collisions led to cost savings associated with vehicle repairs, downtime, and insurance premiums.
  4. Live Tracking: Even in low network regions, the fleet supervisors were able to track the vehicles real-time due to the dual sim switching module.

Conclusion:

The implementation of Starkenn’s safety suite in mining trucks proved to be an effective strategy for improving safety and reducing the risk of accidents in challenging mining environments. By leveraging advanced sensors and intelligent algorithms, the company was able to enhance driver awareness, reduce the frequency of collisions, and realise significant cost savings. Starkenn’s ADAS technology continues to play a crucial role in enhancing safety and productivity in the mining industry.
