The NSA: The Backdoor Men!
Christopher Murphy
Computer Scientist, Internet Security Theorist and Practitioner, Inventor, Author, Entrepreneur - always an adherent of logic, the scientific approach to understanding, and uncompromising "integrity of action"
The NSA is infamous for requesting / requiring hidden backdoors for “National Security” in digital technologies. Every company had to decide between profit and personal, professional and product integrity. I cannot speak for others, but Cyber Safety Harbor has not provided a “backdoor”.
The NSA claimed they would keep these backdoors secret and only use them for “National Security”. Yet, the NSA breach has compromised those backdoors and damaged US security at a level that makes the Snowden breach look like a lunch money holdup!
The lack of integrity, the incestuous venture economy and the monopolistic practices when it comes to funding (while Congress turns a blind eye) is the cause of the cyber crisis. This unholy threesome has fostered an environment of "More of the same only better...so long as the bottom line isn't affected". The "technology valley of death" awaits those who cling to integrity. Most surrender to survive!
Let’s look at the last few weeks of disclosures: Microsoft’s “Golden Key” compromised, leaving every windows system susceptible to attack. Juniper Network acknowledges they have also had their backdoor compromised. Cisco, Fortinet … the list of violated and now failed security products will go on. In addition, innumerable "Browser-Dimension" hacking tools have also been leaked. A Government Agency violated the protection granted to citizens under the Bill of Rights to protect us from whom? Themselves? Now, they have eliminated the possibility of security in the Browser-Dimension!
I trust the brilliance of our forefathers that looked at the world using a scientific point of view. Americans revere Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and George Washington for their courage, intellect and honor. Benjamin Franklin once stated; “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” The NSA breach proves Benjamin Franklin was also a prophet: our Liberty and Safety have been compromised by those who would surrender Liberty for Safety!
"Rather than seeking legislation mandating backdoors, which would allow involvement, technical review, and criticism by encryption experts and the public, the FBI will rely on backroom pressure to make companies compromise encryption, or even eliminate business models it doesn't like," Andrew Crocker wrote in a blog post. "Cryptographers are unanimous -- designing their tools in the way that [Director] Comey wants will have potentially disastrous effects on user security." – by Michael Heller - FBI: Encryption backdoor laws are unnecessary, if companies comply.
I personally understand the pressure to compromise product integrity and yet have stood resolute! The cost has been incomprehensible but I have not wavered. Instead, I have worked and waited for the damage of a failed model to implode! It has, thank you NSA. Patience was the best defense against pressure to compromise product integrity.
Now these brilliant Government Agencies have violated everyone, including the most secure government networks because of their demand for backdoors! While I do not disagree with the Government’s need to have intelligence information, nor do I disagree with the government’s need for proper surveillance, there are other ways to get cooperation. A backdoor for anyone is a backdoor for everyone.
The Government’s ability to keep their “cyber tools” secure has also proven ineffective. The Multi-Dimensional Internet has been presented, reviewed, piloted and yet not widely deployed. The failure to deploy a solution that would have prevented this and every other external breach is negligence! The demand to purchase the company instead of the desperately needed product has played out...is it time to do the right thing?
Congress needs to take action to understand this failure and to prevent similar negligent actions from happening again -- even if the finger points to Congress’s abdication of their oath to "protect and defend the Constitution of the United States" and its Bill of Rights.
Albert Einstein stated, "The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education." The time has come to stop relying on the education of the past with the preconceptions it creates and start learning about solutions for the future!
Perception-based reality may be good for politics, but only fact-based reality will solve the cyber crisis. Is it finally time to wake up, smell the coffee and start choosing fact over perception? The world was proven to be round in 1492 [disputed] and Flat-Earthers were left in the waste bin of history. It is time to embrace the Multi-Dimensional Internet and relegate the Flat-Webbers to the same fate!
The cyber storm is raging out of control. Safe harbor is available. Coming out of the storm is a choice. Will the right choice finally be made?
