NS1 - Powering the Distributed Edge

NS1 - Powering the Distributed Edge

DNS, DHCP, and IPAM are the building blocks that connect users, applications, infrastructure and data.

For 8 years, NS1 has been reinventing these core technologies to unlock the distributed edge. They now run trillions of transactions transforming these protocols into an application traffic and automation solutions that improves performance, reliability, and security.

Since DNS is the world's on ramp to the Internet, NS1's services can orchestrate connectivity for cloud-native network services, edge to cloud networking, or application traffic optimization. NS1 sits between your services, users, applications, and data acting as the ultimate connectivity mesh. They eliminate the barriers that keep digital services apart, and transforming their connectivity mesh to a global steering and intelligence engine for enterprises.

NS1 has quietly been on a tear of achievements, announcements, and innovations!

NS1 Connect Launch: Application Traffic Automation and Intelligence Platform

After more than two years incubating in our R&D labs, NS1 Connect improves visibility, control and automation to create superior application experiences at the distributed edge.

Fully delivered in the cloud, NS1 Connect provides a hosted, on-demand delivery of DNS, DHCP, IPAM, traffic steering, and video optimization services.

NS1 Connect consolidates the delivery stack, and this enables networking and application delivery teams to unify and collaborate. And with all of the steering traffic through the cloud, NS1 provides significant intelligence, visibility, and insights into your traffic, especially if you want it bench marked against others.

Traffic steering, by definition, implies that traffic is moving from one system into another. By integrating with NS1 Connect, the ecosystem can feed intelligence and enable smart traffic decisions. NS1 Connect has a number of launch partners and integrations including Ansible, Apache Mesos, AppDynamics, AWS CloudWatch, Boundary, Catchpoint, Cisco Umbrella, Hashicorp Consul, Datadog, Atlassian HipChat, Kubernetes, Microsoft Azure Active Directory, Monitor.us, Mux, New Relic, NGINX, OctoDNS, Okta, Pager Duty, Pingdom, Rackspace, ServiceNow, Slack, Hashicorp Terraform, and ThousandEyes.

NS1 Labs: A Wave Of Open Source That Redefines Foundational Networking

NS1 has launched a new unit dedicated to investing in open source technologies that drive innovation in foundational networking and application infrastructure technologies.

Two projects are part of the initial class within NS1 Labs.

First, NS1 Orb (and it's cousin pktvisor) are observability tools built to help manage our trillion transaction DNS scale. They provide real-time edge visibility and observability without compromising performance of the transactions that are running through our massive DNS stream of traffic. NS1 Orb can handle millions of observability queries per second, and it is used to detect and respond to security or performance threats such as DDoS attacks.

Second, NS1 Labs has hired Jeremy Stretch, creator and maintainer of NetBox, as a distinguished engineer. NetBox started as an open source tool to more easily build networks at DigitalOcean, and has since turned into a community collaboration that has eclipsed its fifth birthday. NetBox provides network automation, infrastructure resource management, IP address management, data center infrastructure management, and API programmability.

NS1 INS1GHTS Industry Event

NS1 held their 2nd annual INS1GHTS industry event on June 24th. With 27 different sessions, we had more than 1000 registrants.

These sessions will give you the best overview on how the distributed edge is evolving, NS1's technology, and leadership:

  1. "Build The Better Future: How Connecting Applications and Audiences Will Drive the Digital Revolution", Kris Beevers, Co-Founder & CEO NS1
  2. "Extracting the Signal: Rethinking Network Observability", Shannon Weyrick, VP Research, NS1 Labs
  3. "Operational Security - Forging a Secure Organization Through Partnership", Ryan Davis, CISO, NS1
  4. "Creating a More Inclusive Future in Tech", Kimberly Bryant, Founder and Executive Director, Black Girls CODE

Thank you to the many NS1 sponsors that participated in the event, including Honeycomb, Pliant, Netography, Verica, Cisco, LaunchDarkly, Wayfair, Taboola, Disney, Tealium, Fox, LookLeft Marketing, Absa Group, StackHawk, USAA, Gremlin, and Pulumi.

Hi @Tyler, I'm curious to learn what is actually a "distributed edge"? -- isn't edge distributed by definition (as opposed to centralized things like cloud)? Do you mean 'distributed' by the virtue of the edge functions and responsibilities that are distributed across many platforms and systems?

Congrats Tyler, Kris, Brian and team!
