Now You're Just Somebody That I Used to Know:

As I sit here at Sant Ambroeus my make shift office in Palm Beach Florida and sing Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know," in my head, as I eat my 4pm linner (lunch+dinner) I reminisce about the people who have come and gone from my life over the years. My family, the exes, the classmates, the friends who drifted away, the coworkers who moved on to new opportunities and the handful of people who I really cared about that died. They're all the somebodies that I used to know and at times really loved. I know this sounds weird but the current me doesn't even really know the old me anymore and at times I feel like a complete stranger to myself and sometimes I miss me. Does anyone else feel this way?

Every person we meet, even if they're only in our lives for a short time, has the potential to teach us something meaningful, to make us laugh, to make us cry, to challenge us, and to shape us in some way. They're all a part of our journey for one reason or another. Just because they're not a part of our lives anymore, doesn't mean they didn't have an impact on us.

And yet, sadly when those connections fade away, we often forget about them and they forget about us. We try to convince ourselves that they weren't important, that we're better off without them, and that they're just somebody that we used to know, but if we are really being honest with ourselves, it still hurts!

Those one time connections all make up a part of who we are. They've shared life experiences with us that helped us grow and learn, and they've given us memories that we'll either cherish or regret forever. So I ask myself from time to time why do people pretend that the other didn't matter?

Is it because it's easier to bury our feelings than to deal with them? Maybe it's because we're afraid of vulnerability, of admitting that someone who used to be important to us still holds a special place in our heads and in our hearts.

What if we embraced those feelings instead of denying them? What if we acknowledged the role that those somebodies played in our lives for a time and celebrated them for it? It's easy to be torn on this one and go back and forth on it depending on our state of mind. Life is too short to hold onto resentment and bitterness. Instead, we should cherish the moments we had with those somebodies and be grateful for the lessons they taught us.

And who knows? Maybe someday, we'll have a chance to reconnect with those somebodies that we used to know. We'll catch up, have a few drinks, reminisce about old times, and laugh about the things that used to matter so much to us in our glory days. Until then, we'll hold onto the memories, the lessons, and the love that they brought into our lives.

To all the somebodies that I used to know, even though we may not talk anymore, you'll always hold a special place and time in my life. And who knows? Maybe someday, we'll cross paths again, and we'll have a chance to catch up and appreciate each other and all of the good times we once shared together.

Until then you're just somebody that I used to know...Jamison

Some relationships are windows that allow you to look into another person’s life and learn from seeing a different perspective. Some relationships are mirrors, that allow us to see ourselves reflected in another. And some relationships are doors that allow to actually step into a brand new chapter of your life.
