If you want your children to learn to respect money you must teach them the value of it! First of all it is a tool nothing more. It can get you what you need but only if you respect it and understand its value.

You must start by teaching them to count. Children under 5 they must learn to count things such as blocks. pennies, small toys and other things that they can hold and place in one spot and move to another. Have them say 1, 2, 3, 4, up to 10. Each time they hold each thing so the understand the value of each item. Then ask them to give you one toy or one penny. Say to them I want just one and show them what one looks like. Then ask them to give you one. Do it over and over again until they understand what amount each item represents. This must be a learning game for them. Do it with two and three and so on. Then move the game into the house with pillows, fruit and so on. For older children you want them to learn combinations such as 1 + 4 equals 5, 2 + 3 =5 and teach them all the combinations for 10.

7+ 3+=10, 5+5 = 10, 8+2+ 10 and so on. Once they understand combinations they will be able to add faster by breaking down larger number to their sets. Such as 8+7=15 or 5+3 =8 it may take a while for them to see the connection use flash cards or blocks to show them the pattern. Once thy get it use paper and. marker to give them problems to work out. Depending on the age of the child add higher number as they get the concept.
