That Was Then, This Is Now

Did you know that 50% of WW II veterans and 40% of Korean War veterans started their own businesses?
That “boom” of business building lead to a boom in jobs and hiring.
Americans entering the workforce after that boom joined a world where entrepreneurship was quickly replaced by “employmentship”.
Yes, I just made up that word…feel free to use it;)
To this generation and the generations that followed, the primary career path wasn't to build your own job. It was to go to college, then find someone who already built a structure for jobs, and get them to hire you.
And for decades this worked pretty well as the economy and job numbers grew pretty steadily.
Now we get to today where, even though the economy is growing, “good jobs” for college students aren’t growing.
All of those post-war startups are now either big, very mature, or both.
In any case, they are generally not places where you’ll find a lot of opportunities for creativity, flexibility, and change.
Sure, there’s been a burst of tech startups, but the amazing thing is that the successful ones have gone from interesting to stodgy in a 1/4 of the time that it took the post-war companies.
Ironic huh?
So here are some choices;
- Hope for socialism and a working wage while you live in your parent’s basement.
- Get a job at a mature company and do what you’re told.
- Be an entrepreneur and start your own company.
- Treat your career like a start-up
God Bless,
