As economic uncertainty grips the U.S., many professionals are facing an unsettling reality: layoffs in tech, media, federal government, and beyond are becoming increasingly common. For those who have built their careers within traditional employment structures, this moment feels precarious. But while corporate layoffs may threaten financial security, they also present an opportunity—one that I personally embraced over a decade ago.
During the Great Recession of 2008-2009, my husband and I both lost our jobs within months of each other. With an infant in tow and another baby on the way, I had to make a choice: cling to the hope of another employer saving me or take control of my own destiny. I chose the latter.
That choice led me to develop the framework that eventually became Package Your Genius—a five-step methodology to help individuals uncover their unique talents, build their brands, and create sustainable businesses around their expertise.
Today, we find ourselves in a similar economic climate, and I believe my first book Package Your Genius and its companion workbook are more relevant than ever. If you’re navigating layoffs or simply seeking a more stable, self-determined future, here’s how you can start reclaiming your power:
1. Identify the Problem You Solve
People don’t pay for skills; they pay for solutions. Ask yourself: What do people thank me for? What problems do I naturally solve? In my book, I encourage readers to reflect on their strengths and past peak moments to uncover the unique value they bring to the table.
2. Craft a Message Around Your Expertise
Once you know your value, the next step is communicating it effectively. Whether through a personal brand statement, a compelling LinkedIn profile, or thought leadership content, clarity and consistency are key.
3. Position Yourself as an Authority
Your message isn’t just about you—it’s about how you can help others. Share case studies, speak on relevant topics, and demonstrate your expertise through articles, podcasts, or events.?
4. Broadcast Your Genius
In today’s digital world, visibility is everything. Utilize social media, mainstream media, and public speaking to expand your reach. Now is the time to be bold about what you bring to the table.
5. Monetize Your Knowledge
A job loss can feel like the end of financial security, but it doesn’t have to be. The same skills you used in traditional employment can be repackaged into consulting, courses, books, or training programs. Diversifying income streams is the ultimate career insurance.
You Are Powerful
Layoffs, economic uncertainty, and financial anxiety can all shake our confidence, but they don’t define our future. The skills, experiences, and insights you’ve accumulated are valuable—and with the right positioning, they can become the foundation of your next chapter.
I created Package Your Genius during one of the hardest seasons of my life, and I know firsthand how daunting reinvention can feel. But I also know the power that comes from stepping into your expertise and taking control of your career.
If you’ve been wondering what’s next, the answer may already be inside you. You are more powerful than you think. You can do it!

If you’re a high-achiever with deep expertise, consulting can be a power move.
Yet, so many professionals hesitate to step into consulting because they see it as more of a back-up plan. They believe they need more experience, they’re not “ready” yet, or they’ll struggle to find clients.
But your expertise is already valuable, and consulting can be a smart next career step, especially for professionals recovering from burnout.
Many brilliant professionals reach a crossroads in their career where they realize they crave more autonomy over their time, they want to choose who they work with instead of being at the mercy of toxic workplaces, or they’re tired of fighting for a seat at the table when they already have so many of the answers.
Consulting isn’t about starting over. It’s about owning your expertise and packaging it in a way that allows you to get paid for what you already do best.
Here’s how you can package your genius to transition from a traditional job to a consulting business that honors your expertise, time, and lifestyle goals. ?? Read How To Package Your Genius And Transition Into Consulting in Forbes
