NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE CHANGES
If you are part of a private company or government entity now is the time to examine your workplace policies to assure they are taking the necessary steps to root out racists practices and traditional exclusions of people of color.
CHALLENGE YOUR COMPANY OR GOVERNMENT AGENCY
Private companies have had a history of subtle racists actions that have gone unchallenged and left minority workers "last hired and easily fired".
1.Check to see if your Human Resource Department is reviewing any practices and policies that are racist, unfair, and harm black people's employment.
2. Check to see if your company is making the necessary contributions to social justice agencies and organizations that are dedicated to rooting out racism and discrimination on the job and in the country.
3. Check to see if your company's value statement is inclusive of all races.
4. Check to see if your company has made a statement denouncing racism and bigotry in light of George Floyd's and other deaths who have been brutally and tragically killed by police officers.
5. Check to see if black people on your job are being promoted at the level of whites, and if not why not?
6. Challenge your police department to assure they are making the necessary changes to their police practices when it comes to encounters with black people.
7. Make sure that your city, state, and congressional representatives are on the side of justice by making policy and protest stands against prosecutors, police officers, and judges that are detrimental to our community.
QUESTION YOUR WHITE FRIENDS
8. This statement may be unfortunate but true, you may also want to examine your white and non-black (and black) friends to see where they stand on George Floyd's death and police misconduct and what they believe should be done. Just ask them to see where they stand and if they're not standing on the side of justice, you may need to re-examine your relationship with them.
BE BOLD
Some of you may be afraid of losing your job if you challenge your company but if you don't challenge your company you will still lose your job to racism and discrimination. It's better to be bold in times of protest than silent, for silence will only keep things as is and a threat to your security and humanity. Some bosses are looking for workers to stand up, why not give them what they're looking for.
If you want to make changes now is the time in light of the peaceful and nonpeaceful protests that are taking place. The worse thing that can happen is after all this marching nothing significant or substantive has changed. Now is the time!
Peace,
