Now Is the Time to Dance with AI—But Are We All In?

In a conversation that resonated deeply with innovators, creators, and thinkers at the Masters of Scale Summit, Mustafa Suleyman called artificial intelligence a "new digital species." This metaphor points to AI as something not just revolutionary, but truly transformative—a new form of intelligence that evolves with us, changes us, and challenges us to rethink who we are.

Reid Hoffman , always keen on digging beneath the surface, added: "Technology shapes us, but ultimately, we shape it first." This reminder comes at a critical moment. The capabilities of AI are growing exponentially, but our response, our guiding hand in this evolution, matters most. As pioneers across industries face this powerful shift, from movement-based arts to film and beyond, the real question is: are we shaping AI thoughtfully enough, and are we ready to explore all that it has to offer?

AI as a Partner in Creative Expression

As far as I can see into the realms of music, dance, film, and the visual arts, AI is becoming much more than an advanced tool. I imagine choreographers working alongside AI systems that can learn design patterns from existing video, interpret and expand on a dancer's movement—offering visualizations, suggesting alternative flows, and even introducing elements that push the boundaries of the dancer's intention. In film, imagine GenAI proposing new story arcs, helping directors visualize storyboards instantly, and making creative choices that spur unexpected inspiration.

This is not speculation; this is the next evolution of co-creation.

AI is making it possible to explore uncharted territories in artistic expression. It can become a true collaborator, helping creators go beyond their usual limits—suggesting, adapting, and even inspiring in ways a human partner might not. The creative pioneers who embraced movement, sound, and performance as extensions of the human spirit would recognize this as a powerful next step. They might ask:

  • "What are the limits of what I can express with AI as my partner?"
  • "Can AI expand the nuances of my creative work, revealing new depths of emotion or connection?"
  • "How can we embrace this collaboration without losing the essential humanity at the core of our art?"

Omni Media: A Seamless Convergence of Forms

We are now entering an era that evolves the concept of "omni media"—a future where AI helps integrate every form of creative expression into a unified whole. Areas of my particular interest: music, dance, film, image creation & writing— can blend seamlessly, influencing and expanding upon each other through intelligent systems designed to foster these connections. Imagine an AI-generated composition that translates the movement of a dancer into a powerful symphony—one that reflects the core values and rhythm of an organization. Or envision a visual art piece transformed into a dynamic digital performance, where AI interprets its cues to create movement that mirrors the company’s unique identity. These AI-driven expressions are not just creative experiments; they symbolize how a company’s ethos can be brought to life in fresh, inspiring ways, blending innovation with a deep sense of purpose.

This is not just a merging of mediums but a profound expansion of the boundaries of creativity itself. Much like visionaries who once redefined the performance space, we are invited to reconsider the entire framework of how we experience and create art. The questions for today’s leaders, artists, and technologists are both exciting and profound:

  • "How do we build experiences that are fluid across multiple creative mediums, inviting audiences to journey seamlessly from sound to sight to movement?"
  • "Can we architect an environment where technology not only serves our creativity but truly co-experiences and co-evolves with us?"

A Creative Renaissance on the Horizon?

By 2035, AI may be embedded in every aspect of the creative process, not as a replacement for human ingenuity but as a medium through which creativity flourishes. But this vision of the future is not inevitable; it must be architected, educated for, and embraced with intention.

Suleyman hinted at what this means for the creative world when he suggested that AI doesn’t merely reflect what we already know—it brings something more. He said, "These models don’t just give back what you put in; they give you something new, something you might never have considered." In creativity, that means AI could inspire the next great movement in dance, help visualize performances that transcend language, or bring abstract visions to life through film and music in ways we've never seen.

The key for leaders across industries—including the music and dance worlds that I follow closely—is understanding that AI's promise is not just about scaling up efficiency but unlocking creativity on a scale we haven’t yet begun to fathom. Yet, many still lack a deep understanding of AI's capabilities. They experiment cautiously or are just on the cusp of doing so. As we’ve seen in previous tech revolutions—from the web to mobile—there will be adoption. But the potential for AI is so profound that we must push beyond mere adoption; we need to question, speculate, and actively encourage this creative partnership now.

Are We All In?

At the summit, Hoffman urged us all to think beyond just "how to integrate AI" and to instead focus on a larger question: "How do we design a more human future?" This question, particularly poignant as we navigate the intersections of technology, emotion, and creativity, should guide us as we bring AI into our artistic and professional lives.

Think about how previous technological shifts have redefined human interaction—electricity, the telephone, the internet. AI holds the potential for an equally fundamental transformation. But this time, we have an opportunity to shape it, to embed it deeply into the fabric of human creativity and expression, while ensuring that it aligns with our best values.

Hoffman and Suleyman’s conversation left us with a powerful call to action: "Are you all in?" Because this is a pivotal moment. Whether you are an entrepreneur, artist, activist, or leader, this is the time to decide not just to use AI but to shape how it will evolve alongside us. The train is leaving the station, and by 2050, the world will be transformed. What we do now, as creatives and leaders, will define the journey.

Reflective Questions for You:

  • How could AI redefine your creative practice or business strategy in a way that feels more like a true collaboration?
  • Where do you see potential for integrating creative media that may have previously been out of reach for your organization?
  • What steps can you take today to ensure that AI augments—not diminishes—the humanity in your work?

This moment feels both incredibly empowering and a great responsibility. As we stand at the intersection of human creativity and digital evolution, let us be thoughtful, curious, and above all, inspired. Let’s embrace the possibilities, question deeply, and take the leap. Together, we can shape a future where AI isn’t just a tool but a partner in a shared dance of innovation and expression.

Now is the time to ask: Are you all in?
