Now is not the time to avoid the hard conversations

One of the more challenging roles of being a business leader is having tough conversations. The military refers to this as 'not walking past bad behaviour', I use the term 'face the issues', a leading sportsman and team captain very eloquently articulated it as 'the standard YOU walk past is the standard YOU accept'. Whichever way you look at it, as business leaders we occasionally have to address uncomfortable situations with our employees and stakeholders. Experience shows that the sooner you do this the better, to delay is to allow a bad situation to get worse, and believe me they do, they rarely solve themselves or go away, more often they fester and morph from a difficult situation into a nightmare situation. As we exit from this pandemic we can expect to have a number of challenging conversations, so my advice is to face these issues and nip them in the bud, don't let them gnaw away at you and drain you because they will if you don't take early action. DOES THIS RESONATE WITH YOU?
These are the type of conversations we have in Pabasso.com peer advisory boards for leaders of growing business and this Forbes article elaborates on the subject as regards dealing with team members but the same messages apply to issues with all stakeholders including suppliers, customers and funders.

4 年I couldn’t agree more.... little niggles can also easily develop into resentment and that is really unhelpful for the whole team! If we are all open and consistent then everyone knows where we stand...

4 年Great points Richard Doyle - thanks for sharing. Timely reminder - it is easy to do the easy and enjoyable stuff well but that is rarely the basis of greatness or indeed true respect and loyalty from your team. Similarly in times of pressure there is always a good reason for not tackling hard issues - a degree of "it can wait" or "it isn't absolutely essential" is understandable. However it is making the hard yards, the hard decisions, having the difficult calls and conversations that really make the difference. There are numerous quotes that nothing demoralises a team more than observing the acceptance of poor or bad behaviour from a colleague not being attended to. Equally, it may be painful to make major structural change, withdraw from a pet project or part company with team members who have been loyal even maybe become friends - all illustrations of hard decisions great leaders will stand up and take - and deliver their decision professionally and with compassion.
