Now is the Time to Add Market Leading Talent

2020 huh?

So far, we have had an Impeachment of a President, Covid-19 killing over 100,000 Americans, Stay-at-Home orders, Fires in Australia, Earthquakes, Volcano Eruptions, Rogue Dust Clouds from the Desert, Killer Hornets, Widespread Civil Unrest, Negative Oil Prices, Potential war with Iran, the Pentagon released video's of UFO's, a near earth asteroid, Kobe Bryant helicopter crash, Autonomous zones popping up around the country, Stock Market pull back by 30%, Historic Government spending, New Covid outbreaks, Private launch of men into space, the PPP loan, 40+ Million on unemployment, Solar Eclipse, Businesses closing their doors at every turn.

Did I miss anything? Everyone OK? I don't know about you but NYE 2020/2021, I'll be celebrating.

The start of 2020 has been difficult for everyone. Widespread Mental Health challenges, #WFH difficulties, Childcare shutdowns, #ReturnToWork calculations, and countless other challenges faced (and face) everyone. Each person has navigated their environment to the best of their abilities.

The Bad News - We likely aren't past the all the headwinds. Anyone else worried about what July will bring? Oh and there is that Election happening in November.

The Good News - If you are able, now is the time to grab great talent!

I know, I know, budgets are tight, revenues are down, the GDP is shrinking and COVID cases are rising. That said, its important to remember we will get past this someday. Your team will be operating at 100% again and right now you have unprecedented access to great talent.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Great talent can work for companies that are struggling because of the Pandemic.
  • Every candidate who was furloughed has likely lost some trust with their employer.
  • Candidates understand that your company is in uncharted waters. Many candidates are willing to be flexible in the short-term with compensation or PTO if the opportunity is right for their long-term career.
  • Candidates REALLY want to know the direction of your company and the department they would be hired into. Expect difficult questions from quality candidates.
  • You can't change COVID but you must be transparent. Tell candidates why you are taking a risk to add to your team. They will appreciate the candid approach to the hiring process.

In short, if you have been considering an addition to your team, now is the time. It's important to note that the candidate market will likely be flooded after July when the $600 / week federal stimulus to unemployment ends. The government may extend that stimulus, but as of writing, it has not been extended.

Happy Hunting!

Dan
