And now for my Oscar Recap...Took a few days

The broadcast on Sunday was an hour earlier and I had no idea ! Hence, the show itself caught me during shower time for my 9 year old twins. Amanda, my co-worker, texted to tell me that Mizayzaki had won for The Boy and the Heron. I was like - What?? I ran to the TV. Then I realized that Disney had logged me out of my Hulu account as they are changing the terms - which I have not even looked at yet. I to scramble and fine my Hulu password, as my teenager was on Spring Break in New York City. I finally logged in and I was put into the red carpet coverage. They were interviewing Billie Eilish. The show had already been on for almost an hour. I made sure to watch most of the Jimmy Kimmel intro. I didn't like him picking on Robert Downey, Jr. He is an addict who came out on the other side - give RDJ some credit ! I was happy for him winning Best Supporting Actor - well deserved - for his performance in Oppenheimer.

I have talked to some people who are not Oppenheimer fans. But, I can't help it - I thought it was great and I've watched it twice. I have a personal connection to the Oppenheimer story. My Dad was a nuclear engineer and worked for the Department of Defense. He had worked for Admiral Rickover's nuclear US Navy in the 1960s. A major plot point in Oppenheimer was the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). This was the genesis of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), for which my Dad was a consultant for the majority of his career. Needless to say, I found this part of US history rather enthralling. It spoke volumes when you saw Oppenheimer's team doing tests and NOT wearing ANY sort of protective gear. Oppenheimer died at age 62 of cancer. My Dad died at age 68 of cancer.

Back to the Oscars, a few points of information. The most important item a few people missed was that during the show stopping performance of I'm Just Ken -- it wasn't just Slash playing guitar. Wolfgang VanHalen was there too !! I watched the performance twice as we were still dealing with twin bedtime and my husband pointed out Wolfie, who I had missed the first time.

The broadcast this year was viewed by an estimated 19.5 million people. That was up from last year. But consider that President Biden's State of the Union Address attracted 32 million viewers. Then consider that this year's Super Bowl attracted a record-setting 123.7 million viewers. Thank you, Swifties as well as football fans. It does make the cost of the commercials look well worth the spend.

A few things about the Oscar broadcast bothered me, though. Most of it involved the intricacies of identifying WHO was speaking. I mean, I knew it was Jonathan Glazer accepting the award for Zone of Interest in the International Feature category - but I think the general audience should have been informed also. Congratulations, Jonathan !

And when Al Pacino seemed to accidentally announce that Oppenheimer was the winner of Best Pictures, I really wanted to know who the guy with the glasses was who was accepting the award along with film producers Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas. His name is Charles Roven. Where was his lower third?
