Now More Than Ever: Investing in LGBTQ+ Health in Israel Amid the Challenges of War

In a time of war and uncertainty, Israel and the Jewish people have always been symbols of resilience and strength. Yet, as global tensions rise, particularly around the recent conflict, another narrative has emerged—one that wrongly pits being Jewish, Israeli, and Zionist against supporting LGBTQ+ rights and agendas. This misconception has been amplified by the war, making it seem as if these identities cannot coexist. However, this could not be further from the truth. In fact, it is in these moments that our commitment to LGBTQ+ health and equality in Israel becomes more critical than ever.

At the same time, some global LGBTQ+ groups have found themselves aligning with organizations that openly oppose not only Israel and Zionism but also the legitimacy of LGBTQ+ people. This disturbing reality has placed the very communities they claim to support in harm's way, as certain groups they endorse actively endanger LGBTQ+ lives. It is imperative to stress that standing for the values of Zionism, Judaism, and LGBTQ+ rights are not mutually exclusive—they are, in fact, deeply intertwined in the fabric of Israeli society.

The False Narrative: Zionism vs. LGBTQ+ Rights

The war has intensified the misguided notion that being a Zionist or a supporter of Israel inherently means opposing LGBTQ+ rights. This narrative falsely frames the Jewish and Israeli communities as being on one side, supposedly “anti-LGBTQ+,” and the LGBTQ+ movement as being on the other side, fighting for equality. The reality in Israel is much more nuanced. Israel has a proud history of supporting LGBTQ+ rights, with vibrant communities in cities like Tel Aviv and numerous healthcare initiatives designed to meet the unique needs of LGBTQ+ people.

Israel’s commitment to LGBTQ+ health is not a side note or an exception—it is a core value that stands alongside its dedication to human rights and equality. The notion that supporting Israel’s right to defend itself and its people is somehow incompatible with supporting LGBTQ+ agendas is deeply misguided. In fact, the very ideals of equality, justice, and human dignity that drive the fight for LGBTQ+ rights are the same values that underpin Israel’s struggle for security and self-determination.

Global LGBTQ+ Groups Aligning with Anti-Israel Forces

What makes this situation even more complex is the fact that some global LGBTQ+ groups have aligned themselves with entities that not only reject Israel’s right to exist but also do not recognize the legitimacy of LGBTQ+ people. Some of these organizations support or associate with regimes and groups that openly persecute LGBTQ+ individuals, criminalize same-sex relationships, and, in extreme cases, put LGBTQ+ people’s lives in danger.

This creates a tragic irony: LGBTQ+ groups, in their effort to align with what they see as anti-colonial or anti-Zionist causes, end up supporting entities that would strip away the very rights they fight for. These groups are aligning themselves with movements that would erase LGBTQ+ identities and rights entirely, placing their members in peril. It is essential to highlight the hypocrisy in these alliances, where LGBTQ+ support is offered to groups that do not reciprocate that same respect for human rights.

Israel’s Commitment to LGBTQ+ Health, Even in Times of Crisis

Despite the global complexities and the narrative distortions, Israel remains steadfast in its commitment to LGBTQ+ health and rights, even in the face of war. LGBTQ+ people in Israel serve in the military, contribute to the economy, and live openly in one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly nations in the region. Investing in LGBTQ+ health, particularly during these challenging times, sends a clear message: that Israel values the dignity and well-being of all its citizens, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The healthcare initiatives in Israel tailored to LGBTQ+ individuals are vital lifelines, offering mental health support, gender-affirming care, HIV prevention, and other essential services. In times of war, these services are even more critical, as the LGBTQ+ community faces additional stressors and vulnerabilities. For LGBTQ+ individuals already marginalized, the strains of conflict can exacerbate their health disparities.

By continuing to invest in and support these health initiatives, we affirm that the fight for LGBTQ+ health and rights is part of the broader commitment to justice, equality, and human dignity that defines Israel.

Rejecting the False Dichotomy: Being Jewish, Zionist, and LGBTQ+ Supporter

There is no contradiction between being a proud Jewish Zionist and a staunch supporter of LGBTQ+ rights. The narrative that tries to divide these identities is built on misinformation and misunderstandings. Israel’s strength comes from its diversity and its commitment to the well-being of all its citizens, including its LGBTQ+ community.

As the world navigates the tensions of war and rising antisemitism, it is essential that we push back against efforts to falsely pit these identities against each other. By supporting LGBTQ+ health in Israel, we are making a powerful statement that we stand for both Jewish and LGBTQ+ values, for inclusivity and justice. We are affirming that these two causes—Zionism and LGBTQ+ rights—are not opposing forces but are intertwined in the fight for a better, more equal future for all.

A Call to Action: Invest in LGBTQ+ Health in Israel

Now, more than ever, is the time for the global Jewish community and its allies to invest in LGBTQ+ health in Israel. This investment is not just about providing medical care; it’s about standing against the forces of division and hatred that seek to pit us against one another. It’s about showing that, even in times of war, we remain committed to the values that define us as a nation—justice, equality, and human dignity for all.

Let us reject the false narrative that Zionism and LGBTQ+ rights are incompatible. Let us invest in a future where LGBTQ+ individuals in Israel can live healthy, dignified lives, free from persecution and marginalization. Let us stand together, unified in our commitment to a more inclusive, just, and compassionate Israel.

In times of crisis, our values matter more than ever. By supporting LGBTQ+ health in Israel, we are not only affirming our commitment to those values but also building a future that reflects the true spirit of what it means to be Jewish, Israeli, and LGBTQ+—together, not divided.
