Now I Know. Now What?
I think we’ve all been aware for sometime that the learning landscape and how we view information has been changing. In the information age we live in, virtually anything we want to know can be found. This marvel of being connected to the world’s vast archives of knowledge has turned us into a Google society that can easily know answers to most questions. So this has impacted how we learn. Now instead of having to assimilate information through memorization so we can recall it later, we now have to learn how, and where, to look. Remembering and assimilating has taken a back seat to a technology that delivers an instant retrieval of answers for whatever we choose to ask. And now with AI available on command, any answers we may find can be re-packaged, renewed, repurposed, and recreated to seem new, relevant, and fresh. But where is the depth of learning, the appreciation of new perspective and fun in that? If you know the answer, let me know.

I tell you this because the knowledge we can gain is only the beginning of what we call wisdom. According to multi-Emmy award winner Barry Kibrick on his long running PBS television show Between the Lines, he defines the steps to wisdom as a path starting with information, then knowledge and he adds the notion of wonder, which gets us to self-realization, which translates to wisdom. In a special episode Barry breaks from tradition and takes on a solo exploration of what he deems are the three pillars of a fulfilled life: Wisdom, Change and Purpose. I highly recommend you take a look at the show. I’ve included the link here to his YouTube channel. Full disclosure: Barry quotes from my book, the Book of Szen which is truly an honor coming from him. So check it out and join the conversation.
