The Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is looking for someone who is passionate about GIS, cartography, and all things spatial to come join our team. If you love to create new data, update existing features, make maps, or just have a desire to improve the digital spatial world through your work while working as part of a team, this position is for you.

As a member of the Pacific Cascade Region GIS team you will be one of the primary data stewards for a host of corporate data layers that are used by staff throughout the Department. This position supports the Department’s goals both on the proprietary side and regulatory side of the Agency to deliver on our promise to manage state trust lands sustainably, ensure environmental protection, enable regulatory compliance, and provide for public safety.

Pacific Cascade Region GIS staff support program areas within the Region such as Timber Sales, Engineering, Recreation, Asset Management, Forest Practices, Wildfire, and Silviculture. We also provide cross-Region Forest Practices support to Northwest and South Puget Sound Regions as well as Silviculture support to Southeast Region. This position receives and processes data from internal Agency staff and external public stakeholders related to a variety of spatial database systems utilized by both the regulatory and proprietary sides of the Agency. External sister agencies and the public utilize data input by this position. The work can be diverse at times with all of these program areas to support so it rarely gets dull.

As a GIS Data Analyst / Cartographer you will serve as one of the Geographic Information System (GIS) team members within Pacific Cascade Region. You will provide professional cartographic products, perform data input / maintenance, perform spatial analysis, and compile data (maps, reports, digital files) for all program areas.

Typical work consists of updating vector data into Agency geodatabases from diverse media input sources for multiple program areas. These geodatabases are essential to in-house applications such as Land Resource Manager (LRM) and Forest Practices Application Review System (FPARS), which provide the backbone of the State Lands and Forest Practices programs GIS needs. Routine work includes georectification of input data, heads-up digitization of features from aerial photography, hard and soft copy map product creation, and spatial analysis. Data stewardship is a significant responsibility as accurate input and adherence to standards ensures high-quality data for end-users. It is the function of the GIS staff to safeguard data while allowing for timely updates.
