Now Check out The End of Cloud Computing then re-read my 2017 predictions

Take 25 minutes to listen to @Peter_Levine with his “The End of Cloud Computing” https://a16z.com/2016/12/16/the-end-of-cloud-computing/ for deeper context and insight before you scan through my predictions. The whole predictions thing makes a lot of sense in this context. Sorry to jump this out so soon into the new year but is really a repeat with bonus feature at the start. Looking forward to hitting you with business stories about Big Data Analytics/High Performance Data Analytics some time soon. Happy 2017

1. IoT – 2017 big year

2. Big Data- Re-Inflation of Hype (See above)

3. Blockchain. Gets serious – get learning

4. Oracle. On my naughty step

5. Oracle: Probably on other people’s naughty step as well

6. Cloud: Still here. Hybrid rocks

7. Security/Hackers. Essential/Not “going away”

8. Integration: Will burn more cycles than you think

9. GPU=-FPGA: x86 alive and well. So are alternatives/complementary technologies

10. 99.9% of predictions forgotten within 2 minutes

And now the longer form for 2017 predictions:

1. Your Internet of Things project will start and/or succeed. Stop delaying and jump in. Talk to your vendors and partners, talk to your suppliers and customers. This is real and this is happening now.

2. The “Big Data” bubble will re-inflate as more use-cases and software driven appliances make the possible become the “likely.” As with IoT the early disappointments and false starts will be significantly out-weighted by the “to be gained” and what competition/partners etc. are already doing. “Re-inflation” will be partly driven by the impact of prediction (1) above.

3. Blockchain will become important to you. As we see the technology moving into “proven here” space. Whilst not really a 2017 prediction I am sure that 2017 will be the year in which the next “Facebook/Google” will be founded– on blockchain technology - and within the next 10 years the founder(s) will be in the top 10 Forbes rich list.

4. Oracle will face reputational damage for their decisions relating to Java Audits/Charges. Use Java: You need to read this. https://uk.businessinsider.com/oracle-starts-to-audit-java-customers-2016-12?r=US&IR=T

5. If you compete with Oracle – 2017 will be a “good year” – For why - See above; I predict that every Oracle customer impacted will try and “bloody the nose” of the Oracle team coming to sell them stuff.

6. The Cloud is going to get crazy. Cloud is mainstream but the crazy is going to be the need (demand from your users) to get your Hybrid cloud right. This is not trivial and this will not go away.

7. You will be hacked or at best – a hacking attempt will directly impact your business. So many of us understand that a “digital” business is really actually just a “business” for so many of us. Security, digital or physical is, always has been and always will be. Vital to your business.

8. Integrating what you have now - with what you are going to need to deliver as an IT service will consume more time in 2017 than any other project you have, regardless if this is a project you have on your “things to do” list.

9. You will see a GPU or FPGA product or use-case that completely “blows you away” – The HPC guys have known about these two “brothers from another mother” for a while now and the Machine Learning community is well aware about using GPU tools to train models and FPGA providing for easy analysis of streams of data.

10. The number of Predictions blogs-articles-tweets and interviews will increase significantly in the new 14 days. 99.9% of predictions forgotten within 2 minutes

11. Bonus prediction: Using fruity images tagged with “is this appropriate for LinkedIN?” to drive “kred-score-klout points will become acknowledged as the click-bait “sucker punch” that it is. Therefore We will all do it.

Great post! Particularly, the GPU/FPGA prediction. I wrote a post a year before Peter about edge cloud - https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/pushing-cloud-edge-suyash-sinha. I think what Peter describes as the disruptive "end of cloud computing" will eventually be need to be rationalized with the "mainframe" cloud.
