YouTube will play host to third-party subscription streaming.?

YouTube diversifies away from user and creator-generated content and towards primetime. Youtube Director of product management Erun Teague wrote in a blog post, ”People already come to YouTube to watch trailers for highly anticipated movies, or clips of scenes from their favourite TV episodes. Now you can continue watching directly on YouTube. And you will continue to have choice and control over your accounts with the ability to manage all of them in one place.” The Drum?

Elon Musk’s Twitter is working on a paid-video feature with ‘high’ risk.

The new tool will let video creators charge users for access. The Twitter team have flagged big potential pitfalls but they are pushing ahead with plans to charge for content including videos. Oh and of course the company will be taking their cut of creators proceeds (The Washington Post). Meanwhile, what else on Twitter? Musk recently said the company won’t reinstate banned accounts until his team sets up a clear guideline for doing so. Since the announcement, the “Twitter Complaint Hotline Operator” changed the location in his bio to “Hell.” and Kanye West has been banned again.

Netflix adds a new feature to avoid freeloading creepers checking out your ‘recently watched’!

Netflix now lets you log out of TVs, phones, and tablets from afar, even when you are nowhere near them. You will be able to see all TVs, smart sticks and phones that are logged in to your account recently, and log out of them separately. This won’t stop anyone who knows your password from being able to log back in, but is a handy way to stop someone else freeloading in that Airbnb you forgot to log out of last month (Evening Standard).?

Another win for short form video.

Nowadays, anyone can be a storyteller if their content is compelling enough. Growing in popularity is short 10 minute dramas. Major Chinese tech companies like Xiaomi and Baidu are increasing their offerings in fictional short video series. These short dramas are typically low-budget, under 10 minutes per episode, made for vertical viewing and target mobile users. Many of these short video dramas are adapted from web fiction while some are original content (TechNode).?

????Video Remixes, 3D Avatars And Other Cool New Instagram Updates?

The revolutionary one stop app has a whole bunch of new updates. The tools are created with the intent to give users more autonomy over their profile and content.?

New updates this month included:?

  • Scheduling posts whether that's live content or not, so third party usage is no longer necessary.
  • Instagram Achievements are brought to creators who can unlock achievements related to specific actions when creating a Reel. These include collaborating with another creator through Collabs tool, adding stickers or being more interactive with polls or quizzes.
  • Leaving tips and gifts for the creators.
  • Adding songs to your profile.?
  • Creating temporary notes, which can be deleted after 24 hours.

These changes follow Adam Mosseri's (Head of Instagram) testimony with the Senate Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety and Data Security in early December that questioned how the app’s algorithm manipulates and suggests posts on a user’s feed…

??VR headset that can LITERALLY kill.?

Want to take your gaming to the next level? (Please don’t.) Oculus founder Palmer Luckey is taking gaming to a terrifying extreme. In an ode to the famous Japanese novel Sword Art Online, Luckey’s latest VR headset is designed to literally kill you if your character dies within the game. The tech works by ensuring the brain gets “bombarded by extraordinarily powerful microwaves”, it's a contraption that seems straight out of a Black Mirror episode, or perhaps a Saw movie…

Given our rapid adaptation to technology and movies and novels practically fortelling it (Ready Player One) are we surprised at the news of gaming taking it to this drastic level? Blurring the lines between virtual reality and the real world has taken a new meaning.?

Thankfully, the VR headset is still in its research and development stage. Luckey says, “The good news is that we are halfway to making a true NerveGear. The bad news is that so far, I have only figured out the half that kills you. The perfect-VR half of the equation is still many years out.”

Ermmm… think we’ll leave that one off our Christmas list, thanks.

???Billions shopped on Black Friday

The biggest shopping holiday of the year hit us last week. Analysts and e-commerce leaders predicted a timid online shopping season, with sales in the first three weeks of November pretty flat over a year ago due to a weaker economy, inflation, and more people returning to shopping in stores again in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. But the Thanksgiving long weekend shifted expectations.?

There was less wild customer behaviour, long lines and giant signs due to less in-person retail. Although in-person visits increased 2.9% from last year, camp outs have vanished, Business Insider even shared photos of mostly empty Walmart stores.

In the ecommerce world, Black Friday boomed with online sales of $9.12 billion, according to figures from Adobe Analytics. Salesforce also published its own figures based on 1.5 billion shoppers, and it noted that online sales reached $8 billion in the U.S. and $40 billion globally.

A couple of cool stats to note??

48% of online sales were by phone, up 4% from 2021.

Consumers now favour online shopping, especially millennials and Gen Xers.
