November Roundup: What's new in Edinburgh!

Despite the cold, dark days, November started with a dazzling glow of activity as the festive season swings into gear and Edinburgh prepares its seasons greetings. Here’s your monthly update of all things Edinburgh:

?Enlightening events:

November began with a burst of colour and light during the city’s Diwali celebrations in Princes Street Gardens. This was followed by the dazzling Bonfire Night displays, including the spectacular Fawkes Festival at the Royal Highland Centre.

The festive season is now in full swing, with the Mound’s iconic Christmas tree lighting ceremony marking the start of Edinburgh’s Christmas magic. Named one of the UK’s best Christmas markets by Which? Magazine, Edinburgh’s markets have opened across Princes Street, St Andrew’s Square, and George Street. Meanwhile, Christmas at the Botanics and the Castle of Light have brought enchanting illuminations to the city’s evenings.

Closing the month, St Andrew’s Day celebrations promise to showcase the best of Scottish culture with ceilidhs, suppers, and a warm dose of traditional hospitality. ?? The arts take centre stage

The arts scene was in full swing this month as the city hosted the Edinburgh Short Film Festival and the Push the Boat Out Poetry Festival, held across DanceBase, Dovecot Studios, The Scottish Storytelling Centre and The Pleasance. The Edinburgh Radical Book Fair brought literary buzz, while the Creative Edinburgh Awards celebrated the city’s talent, with local artist-run space Sett Studios CIC receiving the prestigious Edinburgh City Award.

Bard Scotland, the cult Scottish craft and design store, also got in on the act, opening its new exhibition, The Grit and the Glamour and the Soundhouse Winter Festival will carry us into December with an exciting line-up of musicians to keep the city buzzing with cheer.

?? New openings & milestones November saw exciting new additions to the city, including the highly anticipated opening of Lost Shore, Europe’s largest inland surfing destination in Ratho. Adding to the excitement, Xtreme Karting in Newbridge reopened with a state-of-the-art racetrack after a £1.5m upgrade, The Witchery celebrated its 45th anniversary with a new shop on the Royal Mile. And Danish homeware retailer S?strene Grene launched in Waverley Market.

?? Food & drink highlights

The city welcomed some fantastic new food and drink spots this month. The Boston Bar and Mara added to the cities thriving bar scene whilst Sotto Enoteca & Trattoria, Stockbridge Eating House, My Home Town and Nàdair added more flavour to the culinary scene. The Pitt Street Food Market has also announced its highly anticipated reopening at Granton Waterfront on 6 December.

Awards were plentiful too! Stockbridge’s Avery earned a spot in the Michelin Guide, Bertie’s Proper Fish & Chips was crowned ‘Best Dine-in Restaurant’ at the Scottish Fish & Chip Awards, and Mamma Roma featured in OpenTable’s Top 100 UK Restaurants for 2024. Edinburgh remains a haven for food lovers!

?? Other goings-on:?

This month, social entrepreneur and co-founder of the Homeless World Cup, Mel Young, received the prestigious Edinburgh Award at the City Chambers. Meanwhile, the city reached a milestone with the first tenants moving into Granton Station View, Edinburgh’s first 75 ‘net zero ready’ affordable homes.

In transport news, the Ember electric bus service launched, connecting Edinburgh and Aberdeen, while CrossCountry introduced a new weekday service linking Edinburgh with Cardiff, starting next month. These developments signal exciting progress for Edinburgh’s future! People will also be delighted by the return of Emirates’ direct daily service between the Scottish capital and Dubai.
